I just bought one and I have no idea how the tripping mechanism works. Any words of advice? Do you have to stop at the end of each row to reset it?

If you haven't been around the trip plow, make sure no one is up real close to the plow as it will drop faster than a prom dress. The land wheel will come forward as it drops so just use caution, and never trust the plow as they will drop for no good reason if years of service has worn the dogs off a bit. NE IA Dave

Rope trip? Give a firm but gentle tug on the rope while you are still moving, and the plow will miracously lift up out of the ground. If you pull the rope and hold it, the plow will lift and then go right back down. One tug, and let go.

Don't ask why I say this but don't EVER tie the rope solidly to the tractor. Make a wire hook that will straighten and drop the rope.

Yep, and don"t ever tie it to the back of your tractor seat...

I agree when you suggest making or using a clip that will pull loose for the plow rope. If you use a light rope, you can then reknot it after hitting a rock but pretty soon you run out of rope if you're plowing rocky ground. We had Farmalls and trailer plows but I'd often help an uncle who had a "G" JD. When the plow hitch tripped the ol' G would go quite a long ways before I could find that hand clutch and hit the brakes. Backing up with that grabby hand clutch to line up the plow hitch and rehook was fun too. I now own an IHC 2-16" trailer plow and it's fun to plow with....like a neighbor once said back in those days "Plowing is more an art than a science".

I've seen what happens when the rope is tied solidly to the seat. It's not pretty, but at the same time funny. No one got hurt, except for his pride, and the tractor seat did not fare too well, but it was fixed, and the plowing continued, and no, it was not me.

Do the same as Rusty Farmall said when you put it into the ground also; one quick pull on the trip rope and let go of it. This of course means we are talking of the trip lift and not trip bottoms for rock protection.

You mean one with trip beams, right? Not the trip type of lift mechanism. With the trip beam, you just stop, back up with the plow still in the ground, and back up a bit. It should reset when the dirt pushes it back into place.
