What would be the minimum horsepower required for a New Holland 273 Square Baler and a New Holland 477 7' haybine? What would you pay for one in good condition?

Kevin

I have a 273 Nh baler and I have pulled it with a 135 Massey or a 1020 JD both 35-40 hp No problems so far. I now have a 255 Massey and that works really well. I need it to pull the 7' haybine. Almost to much for the 135. I gave 1100 for my 273 4 years ago. spent a little money on it but works great Good luck

I've been using that combo for years. Pull 'em with my super H. Tried using an Oliver 550 for the combine - more than 10 HP more - back to the H. More power, better ground speed, and never a plug. Just have to be careful w/o live PTO. Pull the baler with the Super H also. It has a kicker and a 18' wagon on back. Have to go to 1st gear up a good hill with 3/4 load on the wagon tho. Other than that, no problems, but that is a high torque engine. Same HP in a shorter stroke engine will cause you to have fits. Mike

run a nh273 baler with kicker and wagon on a ford 4000 in a pinch but it pushs it on hills! All depends on where and how really. flat land just dropping them i'm sure it would work. years ago, used ford 641 on a nh 269 (or close to it) baler . 7' haybine should be too bad depending on the hay...

I've pulled a 273 for 3 years now with a 860 Ford. Pulls real nice. Paid 300 for it . Excellent machine was thinking green when i bought it, but I definitely wouldn't trade it now.

I"ve pulled that exact combination with a 35 HP JD 1010. Worked fine, but I did prefer a larger tractor. Price, as always, depends on condition. I"ve seen both go for anywhere between $500 and $3000 (I think 3000 is too much).

MH,
Does the 477 windrows make a problem for the baler?

35 hp will pull the 277 with no problem. The baler might work a 35 hp tractor in heavy hay, but it will be just a matter of slowing down some. I doubt if a 7 ft haybine will make large enough windrows to cause problems.
