What would be the value of a JD #5 sickle bar mower? It has been stored out side but maintained. I saw it used this last summer so I know it works. Thanks for you help!

Mike

I have bought two #5 mowers within the last two months.

Paid $100 for a parts mower. I needed the yoke for my working #5 mower. It had a quick tach hitch that I also wanted. The cylinder was missing, gearbox lid was missing, otherwise a complete mower.

Paid $175 for another complete mower which will be reworked. I bought a new tire and tube. Will replace the knife and pitman. It has a foot lever. A foot lever recently sold on eBay for about $65. It has the "kick stand" and the front of the frame and another "kick stand" between the caster wheel and the yoke.

Last week a #5 mower sold on eBay for $455. It came with a parts mower. A few months back someone was giving one away on Yesterdays Tractors.

Since you know the mower works, you might want a minimum of $150 - $200.

If it is an "old" mower (late 1930's to 1940's) with hand lift lever and no cylinder, attached to "L" shaped mower bracket and no quick tach hitch, a minimum of $200.

If it is a "newer" mower (late 1940's to 1950's)with the lift cylinder and quick tach hitch, a minimum of $250. The working cylinder is the additional value.

Other "parts" that are still on the mower such as the two "kick stands", telescoping shaft guard, foot lever, mower to tractor brace/support, and complete original drive shaft will add to its value.

The knife, sections, and pitman can be bought at Tractor Supply. Carlisle manufactures the 4.00 X 9 caster wheel tire and tube.

I really enjoy using my #5 cycle mower. Good for mowing under trees, over terraces, and close to fences.

Hope this helps.

Around $150 dollar would be tops. It could need a few things so figure that in to your price. The seals typically leak and they are a bear to replace. They are very good mowers when set up properly.

It would depend upon condition, apparently working but sometimes things work in spite of the maintenance Some parts are still available and there are a lot in salvage yards to rob from. I have one I paid $125 for years ago and have used a lot. I traded a 3 point Ford mower for a JD#8 in good shape and a #5 that had been botched up to use on a 3 point hitch. I sold the #5 as botched as it was for $200. Hard to tell value, mainly what it is worth to you and the current owner.
