have a chance to pick up an old baler for free. a guy is cleaning out his dads barn. john deere square baler, been sitting in barn for maybe 20 years. worked when it was put in shed for the last time. a neighbor took "a couple things off the back for his baler" guy says only thing he remebers was it didnt tie the bales tight enough. went to look at it, it is buried in the barn under various treasures, (apparently dad was a pack rat). could barely see the baler, will take at least a day and a half of junk moving to get to it. assuming the baler is a john deere from the 50's, were they a decent baler? would parts still be available? i'd hate to spend a couple days digging it out and wind up with a boat anchor. at most i would bale 6 acres maybe twice a year for the neighbors horses. i will try and get a pictre to post of the baler next time im over there. thx glenn

It would be tough for me to turn down the opportunity to dig it out and see what it is. Might find some other good stuff on the way the son doesn't want. Guess I am a pack rat also but have brought home a number of pieces of equipment to use for "metal" to repair and build other stuff. I think I would go for it. If it is a "side kicker" should be lots of good parts anyway.

If it's a JD side kicker, I'd pass on it. Wire tie or twine? Engine driven or PTO?

Probably a 14T or 24T. Good old balers and yes part can be had from JD even the manuals. I also have parts for them since I have 2 junk ones laying around
