Hyd tension on Vermeer 605F ??? How do

Looked at a baler for sale yesterday. Was a spot for a control to dial tension up or down. Control was missing. I've heard people say they modified the tension hookups so no tractor pressure needed. I've never had a Vermeer so if someone could explain all this would be great. Thanks in advance.

I'll try to make this question clear as mud. We have a 605F and a 605 Super F. They have different hydraulic tension set ups. The F has hoses tapping into the tail gate hydraulic circuit. There is a valve located behind and to the right(facing forward) side of the gearbox. A knob stuck out the back of the main frame and was turned to adjust the pressure. The Super F has piping and a valve on the cylinder itself. A short piece of pipe with a cap sticks up above the valve and I think is where additional hydraulic oil would be added. I wish I had a digital camera to take pictures. Look carefully at the baler. Maybe it has this later type set up.

Mine uses the tractor hyd - sort of. I just cranked it up (who wants a loose bale????) and left it alone, so I'm kinda guessing here....

Hooking the door & latch down pressurizes the tension system. When you adjust the dial, it just sets a releif valve which allows the oil to circle through the hyd cylinder up on top. You can set the cylinder to create more or less pressure. Closing the door will charge the system, openning the door relieves the system.

On mine there is a little knob 'behind' the pto area (right behind the pto cover hinge pointing to the pickup fingers) that adjusts the pressure.

Clear as mud?

There is a valve that you can you an Allen wrench to adjust on the cylinder. If missing it should be replaced for the system to work.

I had a 504 F at one time. The hydraulic pressure on the belts was not part of the tractor hydraulics. As the bale grew, the belts put tension on the hyd. cylinder at the center top of the baler, forcing the fluid through a pressure relief valve and causing pressure on the bale. Not sure about adjusting the relief valve, but if the control is missing it needs to be replaced. Another problem is if the o rings go bad in that cylinder, causing no pressure to build up.
