I have an Allis Chalmers small square baler (a 442)
I didn't even know Allis Chalmers made balers either - but this thing ties everything - so it a keeper for now - plus it was free (so far)

anyway, the problem I have is this - I an usually baling baling bone dry brome but it does about the same with alfalfa - windrow size doesn't seem to make the problem better or worse - this is the problem

I have the hay tension handles (the large ones on thebale chamber - not the twine feeding tensions)
tightened pretty good i think - the bales seem to weigh enough, granted I am 40 now - but they about right I think, but the bales are just way too loose - I have a little problem of a spring not releasing letting hay sit in the upper right corner of the bale chamber just before it gets rammed by the packer , but the twine is loose enough a lot of times it slides right off the edge of the bale -

I have baled some alfalfa that was a little on the damp side - I can get 150 pound bales that way (beieve me - only made a couple of those) but the strings on those way heavy bales are still jjust too loose

I will have to inspect further but I don't really think I even have the holes to bolt any wedges in the chamber ...is this what i need to make?

we are used to an IH baler - which rarely tied - so we didn't dare adjust string tension - guess i never gave a thought that the twine tension would control the final product just figured it was to get it to tie....will give that a try....

I can't speak with authority here, but we had a New Holland baler years ago that had a similar problem. The problem was in the adjustment of a set of fork like teeth that pushed the hay into the chamber. We had to readjust the linkage so that the forks did not travel as far, thus leaving more hay on the right hand side. If over adjusted the bale could be light on the left, but a larger windrow could compensate by pushing more material in per stroke. Just food for thought, good luck.

I think you need to tighten up the twine tensioners. They should be located pretty close to the bales of twine and are a couple of plates the twine runs through. There should be a bolt with a spring under it, tighten that down a little and try a few bales. If their still too loose tighten a little bit again to see if that changes it.
