I need a small baler for my AC170. I been eyeballing a vermeer 5400. I see a 554xl on the side of the road ,looks near new.

the 5400 is rated for 40 hp tractor, the 554 xl is rated for 50/60 hp tractor. could'nt ya just adjust the 554 to make the same size bales as the 5400 and use a slightly smaller tractor 48hp?

According to Tractor data.com your tractor is rated at 54 pto horsepower, so i would say u have plenty of tractor for 554xl.

That 554XL will make a 4x5 bale or smaller in diameter if you want. You should be able to pull it unless you're climbing up the side of a mountain baling. I know a guy who pulls one with a 45 pto hp tractor.
When dumping the bale, you don't have to stop the pto on the XL balers and if it's got a bale ramp under there you don't have to back up. The bale ramp will roll the bale away far enough to close the tail gate. I was worried about the same thing when I got my baler, it's a New Holland but..., the bale ramp under there does it's job. When you bale the first bale, dump it and before you close the tail gate get down and take a look and see where the bale is. Like I said, if it's got that ramp, that bale will be out of the way unless you're rear end is headed up hill.
Those XLs are some good balers. Have fun and stay safe with it.

A 170 is a pretty mean tractor, I dont see a problem with it unless you got into some really wirey grass.

Not sure I understand. Your tractor can handle either.

from everything i've read on the 170 diesel it is rated 48 pto hp. i just thought it would be on it's upper limit. i don't want to over work it if i can help it.

the 554 XL is rated for 50-60 hp tractors. I just want to make a 4x5 bale.without killimg my tractor in the process. I do have some hills to contend with. Another thing is i'm not sure about the pto, i know some some balers require you to back up a bit to dump. i would have to stop the tractor to shift into reverse and that will stop the pto. is that going to stress the pto trying to start a full bale?

I have a 170 diesel, and for some reason I always thought it was rated around fifty four HP. I use it on a 4x5 M&W. Sure I can lug it down but when I do the bale is hard to get out of the baler. As for backing it up to dump if you don't want to do that pull out of the windrow and circle while the bale is tying. As for starting a full bale all round balers, that I am aware of, require you to shut of the PTO to dump the bale anyway. If you wrap the bale before you back up there is no need to start a full bale.

I didn't even think about pulling out while tieing. I have only used a square baler and never ran a round baler.

I am pretty sure the 170 diesel is rated 48 pto hp. I think i seen it on the nebraska test.
