Where have all the hammer mills and corn grinders

I've been looking for an old hammer mill or corn grinder and evidently they have all gone to the Chinese smelters! It's amazing to me that what was once common has become scarce.....or am I looking in the wrong places?

have three of them in the shed sitting,all need a little tlc but can stiil be used. The fourth unit is used daily,larger unit. Go any farm consignment sale usually 3 or 4 at each one

We've got one in the back barn, it's a Gehl, PTO drive, on a trailer to be pulled behind the tractor, with a bagger attatchment and atleast 3-4 screens for it. We haven't used it in a few years, but I still like to grease it up once in a while and grind some corn or oats with it. Even with the big screen in, it really grinds those oats...

I'm still using the Case 14 inch hammer mill that my Dad bought new in the early fifties. Belt powered by one of the Cockshutt tractors. Its done a lot of grinding oats and straw. Needs a new bearing on the drive pulley side but I can't get the pulley off so still running it with the loose bearing. I dragged home an old 10 inch IH hammer mill a while ago but its badly rusted out underneath the screen. Otherwise seems good and I might get it repaired. Got a couple of good screens with it too.

My grandad just gave me a John Deere 10 inch mill in good shape. I'm not going to sell it but just wondering what they are worth. He bought it yrs ago at auction for 12 dollars. Back in 40's.

Last spring there was still one along a driveway on the west side of the road, about a mile south of Oxford Nebraska. It's been there for several years. It is a Wetmore which was built in Oklahoma.

On the farm we had one that will always ring in my memory. How those blades clatterty clunked on start up and coast down. Even I got pretty good at lining up the M farmall to belt it. 1/2 twist on the belt and bring the speed up slow a couple notches at a time (on the throttle plate). Then someone had to feed it,,,and not to fast or the M had to purr louder.

Mom used to make rye bread with the flour that hammermill would make with the fine screen in it.

I couldn't believe it about 15 years ago I was at a big yard sale out here and there was a display unit of the Wetmore like Dad had. I bought it! It was a complete unit except for the plexiglas covered openings so the insides could be seen. It even had sockets in it for light bulbs!. It still has brand new blades in it but I only have the one screen for it. I was going to use it to grind yard waste but never had the heart.

My Dads old Fairbanks-Morse hammermill is long gone.I'd love to have it back along with all the different tractors that were belted up to it at one time or another..We ground feed most every Saturday morning.

Decent mills are hard to find, It took me 2 months to find one that I could afford that was any good. The only company that makes them anymore is Artsway. There are still a few NH and Gehls on farm sales, but the late models mills bring good money, people know what they are worth because they are hard to find.

Shoot I have a big hammer mill and a small one, plus a gris mill which I think is another name for a corn grinder. E-mail is open I sure would love to see some one get the gris mill and save it from the rust/scrappers

They do turn up once in awhile, but most of them have either been recycled or have just plain rusted away. Your best bet to find one would be at a estate farm auction.

Used to be that most every Corn Crib had a Hammer Mill or a Burr mill and some had both set up to grind feed for Livestock but as Steel Bins and Gehl and other Feed Mills obsoleted these Machines they became unimportant and I think most were Scrapped out or Junked.I would say if you see a Wooden Corn Crib of old, ask the owner if one of these Mills is still sitting in it. Maybe you will find one that way.Last time I was at the Machinery Auction in Kidron Ohio there were 4 ,IHC Hammer Mills for sale on the Auction. Amish Country is a likely location of servciceable Mills in my opinion. John

I think I still have a belt drive DA West hammermill lying around the farm down in Kansas. I would like to restore it someday as I have several tractors I could run it with.
