Might go look at one. I see alot of people with them only make a 5 to 5.5 ft bale. Do the break more often if you go a full 6 ft? I have a newer baler that makes a smaller bale and am looking for a cheap old rig to make some big as possible bales. Any commments on how many these rigs will bale before they are total worn out? This one has max 5000 lifetime baled so far. New chain and checked by dealer every so often. I need one with another 5000 left. Can ramps be made and fitted or does design prohibit such? I made a set for my other baler from stock steel and saved alll the backing up. Thanks for any input. One more thing-----average bale weight in grass hay??

my grandpa and a neighbor both bought one new in 80? i think. neighbor has more cows and had baled close to 15K by the closest estimate when he was baling on a steep hill side and due to the slack in the tailgate hinges, clamped the gate down cock-eyed and sprung the whole unit. i think he basically sold it for junk and bought a new JD. they are nice balers, but you will have to back up, we've found it a little easier to get started again if you have a little room to get it turning again before you get into the windrow.

Ran one for 15 years, sold it this June, got me a 605 K to replace it
they are good balers, bearing are a problem, but last ones I replaced in 2002 they told me that they had better bearing and till I sold it I had not had another bearing go out. Most years if the bearing would go out it would be in first 25 bales of the season, then after that ok. One time a bearing did go out in middle of season.
I started out running in on a 560 propane tractor ( 60 HP) that was all the tractor wanted really needs 70+ I used a 1066 115 hp tractor last 12 years.
It has a little trouble baling milo stalks and I imagine corn stalks would be same as well. Never tried corn stalks with it. I have heard thay hay saver wheel would help with baling stalks. My K baler has them and had no problem baling corn stalks and milo this year.
It will make a 6X5 bale if belts are all decent and right length I would always run mine till it stopped picking up hay and it was almost 6 foot.
I sold mine for over $3500, I was going to keep it as a backup baler but really did not need another baler sitting around.
Make sure you keep pickup teeth in baler, replace any broken ones, that makes a heck of a differnce.
Good baler, not state of art now, but they will make a good heavy bale and for me it was pretty reliable. My next baler will be another Vermeer when I trade my K in
Let me know if you have any questions. JM

i have two mf 1560"s same as 605 f,but color.work good and and have no telling how many bales have gone through, i bought used. bearings will need have to be replaced so will will chains and sprockets.it depends on how many bales you put up each year, its not a custom balers ,baler slow but sure will put up a 1500 lbs bale, east tx costal.i stop at 5X5.5 bale so to not put so much strain on belts and bearings will go to 5X6.no problems with vermeer dealers in my area. i started with a 605C (closed ) and now work with a 605SJ,much faster and looking for a M over the winter, might rain here in e tx and have hay crop next year. all in all 605F is good old baler and needs a 70hp tractor so nothing is over worked.as for price around here i would think 2 to 3000.00

I have an old Vermeer 605F that I continue loosing bearings on the tripple sprocket shaft (both sides). Usually don't know the bearing is out until the bale and meadow are afire. It is hell fighting hay meadow fires with a tee shirt. Anyone else experience this problem and are there good solutions out there?

Replace the shaft it is worn it only takes a few thousants, on mine the bearing went out and I replaced it baled two bales and it went out again. I called the dealer and he told me this was the problem, I replaced it no more bearing problem.

Mins is a MF1560 just different color of paint. I have a hyd tie which I like from the old manual tie. I have not had any real problems with mine, execpt for operatoe error. didn't watch forming a bale and i got the belts all twisted up. Took about two hours to get em straight. I will make bales up 5.5 never had trouble yet. I would save a fair price is 3500-4000.

I have one I bought in 1981 as a demo, it had baled about 900 bales then. I have baled about 10000 bales with it I have not used it for about 8 years now. I have put 2 new shafts in it one I did one I had the dealer do it was the one in the big drum, the one I put it was the one with the triple gear on the end. Had replaced very few bearings, had to replace the cam on end of pickup once pickup work is on going, that could be the weak point on the 605F replacing teeth and stripper bars. I still have the original belts on it.still made a very good bale.
