Hey guys, does anyone know how to find the capacity on a front end loader bucket? Since the bottom is rounded instead of square I don't think the lenght X width X depth formula will work. Any Ideas? Thanks

Couple ideas...

Do you have any 1" grid paper? (Or cut a piece of scrap cardboard, layout a 1" square grid on the cardboard.) Trace the profile of the bucket, count the squares. 144 sq in / sq ft. Multiply by width of bucket (in feet), gives cubic ft. 27 cu ft / cu yd.

Use trianges, rectangles, and a (half / partial) circle to "assemble" the area of the bucket cross-section. Figure the area based on the sizes of the shapes. Measure the width of the bucket. The volume is then area x width.

Just curious why you need to know exact cubic footage. But, having said that, no matter how far out in the sticks you are, I would think there might be a local grain dealer halfway close with a scale that can either weigh the tractor/loader empty and then loaded with a known commodity such as wheat or corn, or at least have a scale that you can empty the bucket out and weigh. Corn or wheat should weigh 60 pounds to the bushel. A grain dealer can check the test weight, but usually won't be off by more than a couple pounds low if poor quality grain or maybe a pound high if exceptionally good(rare). Just convert known bushels to cubic feet. My reference guide lists USA bushels as converting to 1.24446 cubic feet. Hope this helps.

There should be a tag on the bucket with model, serial and capacity. If not, call the mfg, they will tell you

just tilt it tight and fill it w/ water from a 5 gal bucket. Mark 4 gallons on the side to avoid spilling. 10 buckets x 4 gallons is 40 gallons. Do it before it freezes tho.

Could you fill it with some loose material with a bucket or something of known volume? If you want to measure it, try to find the surface area of one side of the bucket and multiply that by the bucket width. I'm thinking you could get a pretty good estimate of the surface area by breaking it down into a partial cylinder, and maybe a rectangle or trapezoid.

Do you have access to a scale capable of weighing this outfit?

Not really, I am stuck out in the sticks. I guess I could go to an equipment dealer and find a unit that has similar bucket dimensions and see what the manufacturer has listed for cubic feet capacity.
