dump hoist

I have a scissor lift hoist out of a old corn wagon of my fathers. I am going to install it in a pickup box trailer. At this time it is set up as a one way cylinder and when I raised it to test oil came out the relief valve. Will this cylinder need to be rebuilt and is it a hard job or should I let a shop do it? There is no brand name on the hoist, and I don't remember where he bought it. Has anyone else done this? I am thinking of a 12volt pump with power up and power down or should I just get power up and gravity down? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Also how do you figure out which pump to get. The shaft is 1 3/4" and the cylinder is approx. 5" in dia. and approx 22 inches long. Thanks Byron

That fat a cylinder is probably low pressure. At 800 psi there would be 40,000 pounds available on the ram. It may not need even that much pressure.

The piston seal needs to be replaced. There's a good chance it was an o-ring but now is worn flat sided.

Sometimes it takes big tools to take a cylinder apart. I've had best luck with a local machine and welding shop that deals in farm machinery repairs. The seals should be available from Baum Hydraulics. It usually costs me $25 at Randall Machine and Welding to put new seals in a cylinder.

Some of the older wagon lift cylinders were designed for tractors with 800 lb/sq inch pumps. Many of the later cylinders were stronger. Be careful.
