Anybody use a NH stack retreiver?

I am thinking about using one and stack my hay in the field and then later use a stack retreiver and move it to the barn. That would save some road time with the bale wagon. Of course I would have to tarp it in the field before moving it to the barn. Or could deliver it to a customer. I don't want to buy a truck just for that job with all the DOT rules and regulations now,but I was wondering about mounting it on a trailer and pull behind the pickup, but I would need some kind of hydraulics. I don't know where to find a stack retreiver unless Roeder has one. Does this sound like a plan or would there be a better way? Never seen one of those retreivers besides a picture. Thanks

I have seen one before, it would pickup bales one by one, stack them, you could then unload them in a stack, or one by one onto an elevator at the barn. The guy that had it said he used it and it worked pretty good, I don't know if he ever tried to pick up a whole stack, but I bet if it was straight it would work. This machine ran off of a PTO pump and had a sorts of valve, hoses, lever, switches, etc... We made it into a machine to move small grain bins, it worked good for that.

Willy, I've never used one so this info is worth little, but I've watched them in action. I don't think your pickup will be able to push the retriever back under the stack. I could be wrong, I don't know. Years ago my dad had a two wide balewagon that would also retreive stacks. He said it took some pretty good power to get back under the stack. Also it takes a good stack. If your bales have fallen over a bit, they'll never work properly. I've never seen one mounted on a trailer, but that doesn't necessarily mean it can't be done. Sorry about not getting back to your stacking hay on a trailer question its been busy around here. When I stack on a trailer I use my grapple to set 12 bales (2 deep by 6 wide) right up to the far edge of the trailer. Then do another set next to that and so on the entire length of the trailer. Then I set one row of bales by hand length ways in the space left on the near side of the trailer. On my next layer I do the same thing but the grapple sets the bales on the near side of the trailer overlapping the row of bales running cross ways. Alternate layers as you go up. That way you only manually load and unload the rail bales. The rest of it is done by the grapple.

Hi Willy,

I use a Leahman to hurry the removal process.

Don't know why lots of guys just leave their hay out in the field. Anything more than a week and the crop is killed under the stack.

Dave thanks for the good info,if I go this route looks like I would be better using the grabble system and moving them fairly quick before the bales start falling. Now Allen in Nebraska,we are talking square bales here not rolls! Thanks for the info.

bring all your bales home, put them in one place, then watch a late summer thunderstorm and lightning light up the whole pile - then u will wish they were scattered about in several different spots in the field
