disk blades

On new disks today, are the axels round or square? On my disk that I bought, the axels are round. What prevents the disks from spinning freely on the axel? Is it just the pressure exerted on the disk by the spools being pushed tightly togather that prevents this? I have read that this is one of the reasons of having square axels so that the disks dont spin freely.

It just takes a heavy man on the wrench, however both systems, round and square arbor will spell trouble if not kept tight. A loose square hole disc blade will soon become round if run loose.

I can't tell you about last 20 years, but expect prior to that 60% were square arbor and 40% round. That is not an actual statistic, just my own observation, in my area. It may well be the reverse in other areas.

I can tell you this, square arbor is a lot better to work with if changing disk blades.

Anyone know how I can find out the model of disk I have? It is a Krause, has a name plate with serial number, but I cant see the model name where it should say the model. I"d like to find out the age if possible.

Generally speaking, implements are just about impossible to nail down an exact date of manufacture. If they were built by mainline companies like IH, Deere, etc., one can usually find out the years of manufacture. For example IH No.8 Little Genius plows 1932 to 1962.

There may be records for short line companies, but I wouldn't bet on it. Krause may well have been manufacturing that same disk for other companies as well, at the same time. As someone stated disks are quite generic.

The disk is 10 foot wide, and has 17 inch blades on it. The fronts are notched. It looks like it was a red in color from the spots where it is still visible.
