I'm see alot of New Idea around. I looked at some used at dealer lot. Do they use a long shaft in the bar instead of a line of gears? Looks like that would be better-----???? Or would it? Thanks

NI now solid shaft in reply to GDH, 11-27-2006 04:36:07
New Idea switched to a split shaft about 8 years ago. The early ones had a solid shaft which was very difficult to fix. There is a serial number change the dealer must know.
We used one for years cutting 125 acres per year and it has held up perfect. Not sure about the others but Kuhn makes durable products. We chose NI because of personal experience of prior mowers and talks with people that owned them.

we've had a disc mower since 1979... gehl (vicon) and it used the gear-gear design..

we've had not had a problem with that-- the seals after 20yrs have got leaky around the discs shafts ...

long lasting... ya think so and well I have hit hidden engine blocks and fence posts and such too.... and still tickign (well it kills bunnies)

We have a NI 5409 that's around 10 years old and all we've done to it since we bought it in '02 (been over about 500-600 acres a year since we bought it) is regular maintance, new belts and cover last year and I had to weld the frame in one place. Last year we bought a new Case IH MDX 91 disk mower and it was also a good mower but I like the way the New Idea cuts better. If you look at a Kuhn and a New Idea you'll see that the Kuhn has a much heavier hitch and I think they will work on a quick hitch with an adaptor. We've been very happy with our shaft drive mowers but for next year we are looking at a disk mower conditioner and I really like the looks of the Kuhn machines.

I dunno which is best. I've had a couple Kuhn's now, and I can't say much bad about them. I've never had any trouble with the drive parts of the cutterbar's on either, although I have sheared some disc spindles on the discbine from hitting rocks.... That's not the mower's fault. That particular bar is a modular design, so the spindles aren't too hard to change. Personally, I'll stay with the spur gear driven cutterbars. Kuhn has been good so far. I might look at Claas down the road... but I don't even know what type of bar they have right now.
My opinion on bevel gear cutterbars is much the same as my opinion on bevel gears in general. I've yet to see a bevel gear that I like, or one that holds up over the long haul. If one wonders why not so many old Kuhn or Deere discbines are not traded in, and they went around the country to look and find out why, I'd suspect that a good many of them that were properly maintained are still pounding around the field, as they were 20 years ago. The ones that wern't looked after were scrapped or traded in. The bevel gear mowers may have their points, but in my mind they've got their faults too. Choose carefully. Maintenance is certainly a key too....

Not sure where my reply went, maybe I forgot to post. Anyway..... my dad has had NI disc mowers since the late 80's. The red ones are much better than the grey ones. He's had his red one since they came out in red. I'e had Deere, Kuhn, Bush Hog. The NI cut cleaner, faster, adn with less hp than any of them. I bought a red NI new in '03. So far nothing but blades.

The longevity of any machine depends most on the operator not to abuse it and service it.
Concerning the shaft drive mowers the Lely design was first and the New Idea is a copy of that design. I can speak for most of the brands because we receive them on trade all the time. If the mower needs repairs and is worth fixing we do so or we send it to the auction. We have good shaft driven disc mowers traded in all the time that are 15+ years old. It is very rare that we have oil bath style cutterbar mowers traded in that are that old. Why, likely the customers did not change the oil every year and once the disc mowers become older it cost more to fix a oil bath style mower than they are worth so they get junked and or sold at auctions where it's an as is situation.
The shaft drive has 1/3 less moving parts and takes less HP to operate safely.

I don't know anything about the New Idea. There has never been any dealers in this area. I know a friend that had one of the Bush Hog disc mowers that had the shaft that the individual units slid on. It was one problem after the next with it. I think that he worked on it more than he used it. He said that the shaft would twist and that was what caused the problems. The Bush Hog dealer also told me those were very problematic. I would imagine that the problems have been worked out of them by now though, In this area most of the disc mowers are Kuhn. The first mower that I had was a Kuhn and it gave me very good service. The reason I sold it was the cutterbar was worn to the point that pin holes were wearing in the cuttterbar. I never had any problems with anything else. I am now using a drum mower because it was a good bit cheaper and from what I was told less maintenance and upkeep. I have had it for about 10 years and haven't spent anything on it except for blades.

We had a NEW IDEA disc mower, it was same as friends mower. We were always putting in bearing or taking apart to repair shafts, we run it for 5 seasons (commerical hay baling) and parked it.. we replaced bearings shafts and gear box..We now run KUHNS. ran my first one 5 years and just replaced wear parts got 2 now one with 3 years and one with 4 years...replace oil in gear box every hundred hours and bar every two hundred...
never had any problem with bearings... MY personal the KUHN GMD 7OO HD cannot be beat...

MAY GOD BLESS THE USA

The Bush Hog design was an attempt by Bush Hog and Comer to get around Lely's patents. This Bush Hog design was a failure and is not the same as the New Idea, Lely, Vermeer or HayMAXX designs. We have sold disc mowers for over 25+ years and have seen ever brand and design out there. They may all cut about the same but durability and cost of repair differ dramatically.

Concerning a drum mower, most any manufacturer's drum mower will out last their disc mower. There are some limits to the drum mower technology but drum mowers like the CCM drum mower offer the cutting technology of a disc mower at 40-60 cost savings.

I had a question, I am getting into the small hay business, next year, please do not laugh as we have a 9 acre hay field, but it is a million to me. My question is for doing mixed hay say 50/50 Timothy/Orchard grass, DO I WANT a haybine, disk mower, or disk bine, And yes money is tight. MERRY CHRISTMAS;

What kind of weather do you have? If rain every 4th day, I'd say a haybine for small farm.
