Hi,
I Have a Krause 13 1/2 Disk that has a couple of broken blades. Who even sells Krause disk blades ( JD, Case IH, Agco, etc)? Would John Deere disk blades fit on? Also, would it be possible for my disk to have small disk blades on the front and bigger ones in the rear? I measured the front ones and they appear to be 16" and the back oness 17 1/2" to 18".
Of course they could be wore...
Thanks, Brett

Brett: Within the last three minutes I did a Yahoo search for "Krause Discs" and got the Krause website that has a dealer locator window that asks you for your ZIP and PRESTO it gave me the names, addresses and telnumbers of eleven Krause dealers in my area.

Up here in Canada we have quite a few old one way discers which were once used for seeding coming up at auction sales cheap. I replaced my tandem disc blades with blades I salvaged from one of these, for a fraction of new cost.I even had to cut the center holes larger with a cutting torch. That was at least 10 years ago and lots of use,None have ever broken.

Thanks guys,
I know it needs all new disk blades, but I'm not going to be doing much disking with it, just a couple acres here and there. If I was I'd probably be money ahead to get a bigger disk with better blades on it. Those blades add up fast!

Yes Sir,

That is what I was just going to suggest. Might be better off just swappin' discs.

I would guess that your disc had at least 18" blades when new. It may have had 20"... Just measure the size of the blade, the shaft size, and go to any farm equipment dealer. Blades are very generic... One thing I will say though.... If yours has square gang bolts.... You will notice that the new blades will come with 2 different size holes listed on the blade, for either 1" and 1-1/8" or 1-1/8 and 1-1/4", etc. Always try, if possible, to make sure that you match yours to the larger hole size listed. These things are set up with 8 points... the second hole is turned 45 degrees to the first.... If you use the smaller hole, 90% of the time, when a gang bolt gets loose, the blades will round off that small bit of metal, and then you've got blades turning on their gang bolt rather than working the ground. That's the big thing I'd watch.
Beyond that, i never bother with buying used blades. I guess that could work if you're not planing on doing much with the disc... but if you're going to do any amount of work, then buy a new set. Save your old ones for spares. For the amount of work and misery involved in breaking a gang apart to change a blade, it's just as well to go new. The old blades tend to break... For what it's worth,

Rod

Bret: If your back blades are 17.5" to 18" and the front only 16", you need more than 2 blades. Those 16" would have been 18", and with 2" off them they basically non effective.

Disk blades are not sold by make, they are either square or round arbor, and are sold in different gauge as it applies to thickness. You need only the size and shape of arbor, and the desired gauge, and you can buy them just about anywhere.

If you look at that pile of used blades, check to make sure they still have plenty concave. Compare with new blades. Often times you find these guys selling worn out 20" blades as 18" blades, or worn out 18" as 16". Each have different concave and if that concave is gone, your basically buying scrap metal.

Some times you can find blades at used tractor dealers , Independent tractor dealers that deal in used eqpt they will get disk in on trade & part out . Was out at my Brother-n-laws in MO a dealer had three stacks about two foot tall said take your choice $5 a Piece . Try a place like that first .

Well, there are 20 different universal blade types.... But, someplace like Shoup will start you out, search the web - shoupparts.com I believe.

Blades should be the same size. Fronts will wear down faster, as they get tougher dirt. Your machine musta started with 20 inch blades all around.
