I just bought a kewanee disk and would like to paint it. I was wondering what color this was, all I can tell is it was some type of red. It has black rims but I was wondering what type of red is it and what color were the disk blades? Thanks for the help I really appreciate it

As I read through the posts I noticed that the original question pertains to an earlier Kewanee disc and the answers are for a later disc. The earlier ones had black rims and the later style, 70s on had yellow rims. I had a 12 footer like the original question describes. The red is probably a matter of opinion as it's faded over time so it probably was pretty close to a massey type red. The hangers that drop down to hold the gangs are green, maybe an early oliver green. The rims are black. The blades do not get paint. The blades need to have a plow coat material applied to them. This is like a dry oil that is easily scoured off when put into the field. It goes on wet and oily but dries in a light layer. It is also black. There are also at least one or two decals on the front of the pivot pipe to the left and right of the center. I was going to redo mine but it was going to be much more work than it would ever be worth. I still aplaud the effort. If you have any more questions let me know.

When I went to buy parts for it the guy said its a old disk, and he could get parts anymore for the thing. Where do you get plow coat material? I never seen it before.

They will sell the plow coat at almost any tractor supply store. You will have to ask an aisle clerk in the store and they should point you in the right direction. And, parts aren't really available for something like that. Some things like scrapers for it may be available at the same tractor supply store. Usually that is what goes bad on these. The bearing on the disc gangs is one of the better designs I've seen though on an older disc like this. Good luck. If you tell me what kind of stores are in your area I may be able to point you in the right direction. Also, you will need one or 2 cheap paint brushes to apply the stuff.

Haveing 3 of these disks I think MF (1970's red -- it does change from time to time)
MF RED is good we used that when we did ours

YELLOW not black wheels-- and Yellow bearing hangers

if you think you have to paint the blades they need soft black

I did a image search on google and only came up with old equipment and it was a dark rusty red so I have no idea what color it is supposed to be. I thought it was just a dark redish brown but I found some spots in the corners that is like a IH or massy red. Were the disk blades painted black or were they red too?

New disk blades all I've ever seen come with a soft black paint on them. I said MF red because of some old ads I have with Kewanee but they are B&W colorized and they used a bright red in ads not dark like old IHC.

A lighter brigher red like MF red would probably be a close match?
