Who makes the best soft core,fixed chamber round baler? Some of the brands I have never heard of in my area. I have seen more Claas than any other brand.

I have had a Owatana 595 fixed chamber baler since 1980 and is still going strong. I'm sure other company's have made more improvement since mine was made. Sure can't beat those type of balers. Low maintenance and the cows sure can get a bite of hay easier with that softer middle.

My opinion on that is quite simple. Claas. I don't know that you would really find a "bad" soft core baler. I think of the different ones on the market, all are quite servicable. However, Claas has done a good deal more development work with soft core balers. The newer models have the MPS which mounts the top 3 rollers on a hinge that allows them to drop down into the chamber to start compressing the bale sooner. From what I'm told, these balers will make a bale as tight as any hard core baler. I'm still running an old Claas 44s that just won't die.... so for now it'll do. I think if you want a top capacity baler, Claas is the way to go...

I don't know if this baler would be classified as a soft core or not but the strangest baler I have seen was a Lundell I think it was called. It rolled the hay on the ground and from what i remember it made poor looking bales of hay. It was the only one that I have seen. Think that it was made by some Canadian company in the early 80's or late 70's.

I think that is right. In the fall of 1974 I was looking for a round baler. This was early in the large round baler era. There were several companies just bringing out large round balers. Two of the earliest were Vermeer, and Hawk Bilt, which was made in east central Iowa, I think. The Hawk Bilt rolled the hay on the ground. I looked at them extensively but in the end got a Vermeer. So far as I know, the Hawk Bilt just sort of faded into the sunset.
