Hugh,I respect your information and knowledge but I think your wrong on JD quoting advertised HP as engine HP for 40 years.Your wrong if you think a Farmall SuperA can outpull or even stay within spitting distance of a JD 2350!!!! Tx Jim

Jim: John Deere just don't say which hp they are advertizing. They don't list it as drawbar, pto or flywheel. I'm not saying I've seen all of their advertizing, but I haven't found what your suggesting.

You read what I said, I never said a Super A could out pull a 2350, or even keep up under all conditions. All I said was that under the same load which was not excessive for a Super A, Super A was lugging it along in 3rd gear about the same speed as 2350. The 2350 was belching black smoke on the hills, and that is exactly what I said. That is a far cry from what your suggesting.

Hugh,in your first post you stated "JD advertises only flywheel HP". Not true for when I sold new JD tractors in the 70/80's. Alot of 40,50 and 55 series JD's had more HP than advertised. You stated that JD 2350 blew black smoke going up hill. I think you implied that your Super A could pull with the JD 2350. Most diesels blow black smoke going up hill except IHC's suchas 1066 or 1486 and they blow alot of black smoke on level ground. Happy Thanksgiving,Tx Jim

I checked and I couldnt find any deere literature that listed anything but pto hp. I suppose that could be a difference between the states and canada. I did check the numbers and a 4630 was advertised by deere at 150 pto hp which agrees with the nebraska test data. I read your post several times and it seems clear to me you are suggesting that your tractor at 19 pto hp was doing the same work as the other tractor which has 56 pto horsepower. bill

bill: No, what I am saying is the 2350 Deere was belching black smoke on the hills pulling a Super A load. This was not an exceptionally heavy load, Super A was rolling along up hill and down without any difficulty. The Deere was quite a new tractor at the time. Quite frankly I was disappointed in the Deere.

Now if you and Jim don't understand what I'm saying, may I suggest you take a few lessons in grammer.

Hugh,

For what it's worth, I can see where someone would think you were implying that the Sa was running with the Deere... until I read it again. All that said to me is that the Deere was making some smoke on the hills. There's lots of reasons why that could happen. To start with, the Deere is probably 3 times the weight of the SA, so it's got to work harder to start with. Being a larger tractor, the operator probably decided to gear up/throttle back.... so the tractor would be producing more of it's torque potential while at a low rpm where it's not making much power anyway. Hit a hill where it starts to lug a bit in the higher gear, and it's going to smoke. I've done that kind of thing many times with my Fords. They smoke. I just don't read too much into a bit of smoke...

Rod if you reread Hugh's first post it states a Super A pulling "SAME LOAD" while JD is blowing black smoke, that to me implies that a Farmall Super A will pull with a JD 2350 which is BS !!!!! ! Tx Jim

No, I get it. You are saying because deere misrepresented the power output of the tractors they built for the last 40 years that a 2350 deere struggled pulling the same load you pulled with a super a farmall. See I understand even with my simple rural education. bill

Hugh I don't think you understand what your saying "IF YOu THINK YOU WERE NOT IMPLYING A SUPER A WOULD PULL WITH A JD 2350" and that flywheel HP is all JD advertises. Show some documentation not just hot air. Tx Jim
