Animal,I've been custom cutting with one for over 5 years. The advantages already mentioned far out-weigh the dis-advantages. If you try one you wont wanna go back. You only have to buy one caddy as you just trade worn out disc-mower. Tx Jim

Pros 1)It can be hooked up a lot faster
2)Cutter bar doesn't seem to trip as much in rough ground
3)I think you could get by with slightly less HP IMHO 4)When I park the mower it doesn't try to flip over any more
5) Did I mention it was faster to hook up?
6) I can hook it to my truck and transport it to another field
7) cuss word use has dramatically been reduced

Cons 1)Cost
2)It might be a problem if you haul your tractor and cutter 3) Did I mention cost? :^)

If you use one tractor to cut and bale with and you switch between the cutter and baler frequently, it is absolutely worth it.

I have been looking at them for a couple of years now, I have got the material I think I will make building one my winter project. I hate hooking those darned old disc mowers up so bad I use my cycle bar instead of wrestling with the disc. I was pressed for time yesterday so I wrestled it on a tractor, as sweet as those disc mowers work I thought that a caddy would be the cats pajamas.....since your input this put the icing on the cake.... as always thanks a million felllas..

Most definately it will help, you have to have your tractor right on the money to hook them up, heaven help you if your on a slope, its kind of hard to explain but after your first hook up by yourself you will understand what we are talking about.

Something else to look out for, you may need a hydraulic lift on the caddy depending on what type of cutter you have.

The dealer told me the brand I bought was full of steel shot all the way down the left hand side square tubing. It is suppose to be counter weight for the cutter bar. That something else you may want to consider before building it.

Hyd. Lift?? in reply to Blue guy , 11-23-2006 07:45:46
Blue guy do you have any idea what brand disc mower requires a cylinder on the caddy? My caddy has the brackets(rockshaft) but I see no need to operate my NH 617 disc-mower. I think the idea of lead shot in LH tubeing is a good!!!!! ! I agree with animal that one could be built cheaper than $2500/$3000 if one was handy with a torch/welder. Tx Jim

The new holland doesn't require a hyd lift. Mine is a 616 NH. I think the kuhn's(and possibly a couple of others) may require the use of the lift.

Mine is a KMC brand. I thought about building mine, but after I figured on the materials and all the leg work and labor I decided to just go ahead and buy it. Plus my first cutting was approaching real fast.

Blue I know what your saying, mine is a J.D. spell that kuhn and I am going to need a rock shaft, I plan on using I beam for the frame, and I can add weight if needed. If I did not have the material to make it already your probably right it would be cheaper to buy one...
