Hi Everyone I"m thinking of buying a John Deere 466 baler and I"m hoping some of you could tell me if this was a good baler or not? The pros and con of this baler. I"m a mechanic so working on it will be no problem. he wants $1500 OBO, runs good, stored inside. Thanks for your help, Chris

Happy Thanksgiving to everybody and thanks for the answer to my ? and yes it is a square baler. I haven't pick it up yet but have been talking to the owner about it. I live in Colorado and it's in Nevada. As you now I'm a mechanic and prefer to buy used and fix it up rather then spending the big bucks for new. The only problem I have is that I'm out here in the west and most good used equipment is mostly out east of me miles and miles away then again equipment out here also can be miles away also. So anyways I plan on going out to Nevada an taking a look at it next week! And while I'm out there I'll be picking up some hay to sell here in Colorado since hay is so expensive here $150 and up per ton now and $80 a ton in Nevada. I use to live in Elko, Nevada area and there are lots of hay ranches out there like the TS ranch that grows 25,000 + tons a year with the help of 75+ pivots. Once a month they have a "you haul hay day" for the public at $70-75 a ton all in the big square bales so I may call them and see when there next sale is before I go. Thanks, Chris Hotchkiss, CO

So is it a round baler or square?

If it is a round for $1500 buy it no questions asked.

Forgot some other things to look at.

Check bale case for wear. Especially the bottom rails inside where the plungerhead rollers run. Also check the knife on the plungerhead and balecase. All the above are replaceable.

The shielding was a rather pain. Later machines did not have it. 336 and 346 Balers of same vintage sell for $1500 to $3000 or more.

Post questions if you have any.

Good baler. The size of the bale is 16" x 18". Most balers are 14" x 18". Might be some resistance from people buying the larger bales. Of course you can still determine (set) the length. Believe it was 103 strokes per minute. A hay eating ****. You can always slow down the pto.
Get an OM. You will like the baler. Parts are still available for knotters. The baler is about 30 years old.
