Poles used for stacking with a NH balewagon

Can somebody tell me what kind of poles that they use to hold the stack before pushing the wagon from the stack with a NH balewagon? I have a 1030 and it did not come with the poles and I need to make a couple and I needed to know how long they are supposed to be and how and what to make them out of. Thanks

Thanks for all the information and the pictures that is alot of help, now I know what they are supposed to look like and I can build a set of them. Dave in your picture of the stacked hay,do you use a grabble to load trucks with? I was wondering after seeing the picture how well a grabble would work on a stack made with a NH balewagon. Thanks

Sure do. They make grapples of all sizes and shapes anymore. You can get grapples that will grab an entire layer of a stack at a time. Problem is you can't set it on a semi as three bales is too wide, so I set mine up to grab two bales deep. Then I just pick up the remaining row set it next to another remiaing row and get a full grapple full again. Only time I move bales in the tie layers. In good solid bales I can stack most of a semi with the grapple and only have to set the rail bales by hand.

David thanks for the good pictures,now I have one more question do you have any pictures of you loading them on semi? I am not sure what you mean by rail bales and how you stack them,we never have loaded a semi but always small trailers or the back of a pickup. I am thinking about renting a place about ten miles from me and it would be too far to travel with the bale wagon but was thinking about stacking them with the bale wagon in the field and then later loading them on a trailer and bringing them to the barn and then stacking them in the barn. Do you have any fields that are a long ways from your storage area? I raise bermuda grass,no alfalfa here and we usually get rain or showers in the summerenough to get the hay wet where we can't leave the hay out doors like ya'll can. Thanks

Thanks David for the pictures, you are always alot of good help. What brand is your grabble? I can't read the brand name in the picture. Was it specially made for the bale wagon since it picks the bales up on edge instead of being flat? On the accumulator systems the bales are laying flat and I didn't know how well they worked on the bales on edge. Thanks

Its a Lewco grapple. My JD dealer also deals their products. It'll lift 12 bales on edge. There are a lot of grapples that will pick up bales on edge. Mine will pick up flat or on edge. The only difference is that the ones used to pick up bales on edge will have more teeth than the ones used for bales flat. I've seen ones designed to pick up bales flat and people add more teeth and they'll then work for picking up bales on edge. I'm pretty sure that Lewco will build you whatever size you want as mine was a custom length. I've been very satisfied with it, but it was fairly pricey.

I don't know what models the neighbors we bought hay from used...but we just used whatever was handy. Since we had lodge pole pine poles (for fence rails), that's what we used.

I don't know that anything special is required - just something fairly stout, long enough, and (kinda) easy to handle.

Here are some photos of the poles from my 1037. I don't know about your wagon, but mine had a place under the second table to carry them. They're a little short for my bigger wagon as you can see, but they help some. I only use them on the first two stacks and then I just get the stack leaning backwards a bit, and forget the poles.

I've been using 3inx4inx12ft oak tier rails to stabilize my stacks. Got hundred of them since we quit raising tobacco. Only problem I had with the pipe poles was I needed way more than I had since we stack in side in multiple buildings might have 10 runs going at once.

We used two ten foot lengths of 2" thinwall electrical tubing (EMT) with our 1033.

Willy,
I've got a set that was for my 1037. That balewagon is no longer around, but I use the poles on my new wagon. They're just a long piece of pipe (I'm guessing 1.5" diameter and probably 10' long) with a small square (4"x4" by .25" thick) of flat plate welded to one end of the pipe and then a small length of solid rod (0.5" diameter by 3-4" long) welded on the opposite side of the plate. Stab the solid rod into the bale untill it hits the plate and pull the bottom end toward the stack till it is holding the stack. I'll get you some pictures and actual lengths tomorrow as those were just guesses.
