I used the vise and socket method for the installation of the cross bearings. I had some trouble which is probably related to not having done this before. But, to help others in the future....

Make sure the open end of the socket is AWAY from the cross bearing end cap when you apply vise pressure. I had two end caps crack and fall apart on their tops. I believe the cross bearing spindle pushed up from below and cracked them. With the "flat" side of the socket against the end cap this didn't happen.

Repacking needle bearings is no fun. I took all the typical precautions. But trying to align the end caps while balancing some sockets AND tightening the vise, I ended up dropping a couple. Plus, I had to recycle some old end caps since I cracked the two new ones.

My new PTO shaft now has all the necessary yokes. But, I fear it will be a little long. I'll take it out to the tractor (at our land) and measure. I didn't take into account the added length of the yokes. I have a feeling I'll have to have it cut down. The square tube will be easy to cut. The other end is a tube with the yoke welded to one end and the square 'recepticle' on the other. This portion will have to be cut in the center and welded back together....one step forward, two steps back!

DO NOT use the sockets when putting the caps on the cross. The caps cracked because some of the needle bearings fell out of the caps and got on top end of the cross. Put the yoke and the caps in the vise and use the vise pressure to close the gaps on the caps. Do not use sockets at this time. On cutting the shaft, Do Not cut the female end, all ways cut the male end if it needs to be cut. The female end of the shaft is a sliding guide and the tube is of thin metal, difficult to weld unless the plateu on the slider is cleared and clean. BTDT many times.

No the bearings were all in place. I could see them when the entire end cap surface (the top) disintegrated into little fragments and fell off.

What clearly happened is that the end caps were pushed down onto the cross bearing spindles by the sockets. Since the sockets were placed with the open end against the end cap this led to the pressure being applied at the perimeter of the end caps. As the vise squeezed everything together the "skirt" of the end caps were pressed down while the "top" of the end cap was halted from further movement by the spindle on the underside. Kinda like the old Laurel and Hardy movies where they pull the top hat on too tight and the top pops off!

On my PTO shaft at the receptacle end there is a special adapter that is welded to the end of the tube. This is round and the same diameter. But, it is solid and has a square hole down the center. The entire assembly is rigid. I like the suggestion below to try to cut it off right at the adapter so there is the potential to re-use the adapter's recessed lip that aligns the tube with the adapter.

IF the square receptical is welded on he will have to cut the tube.

The square is usually not square, but rectangular to maintain phasing of the u-joints. It has to be put back the same way relative to the yoke.

It may be easier to unweld the yoke, move it down the tube and reweld after cutting the tube to the correct length.

Paul, you shouldn't have to re-weld anything to shorten a sliding PTO shaft. If you need to shorten it 6 inches, for instance, simply cut 6 inches off of each of the sliding male and female components (these may be a solid square shaft male and a square steel tube female, or on some of the newer shafts a sort of triangular shape). You'll also have to shorten the shield accordingly. Cut 'em, slide 'em back together, and be on yer way.

I'm afraid my "male" end is a square tube. This will indeed be easy to cut myself. However, the "female" end is a wide round tube. At its "receiving" end is a welded on solid round section that has a square receptacle in its center that receives the male end. I would need this special section cut free and rewelded. Seems to me cutting a section from the tube and rewelding the tube back together would be the simplest approach....but then again I'm not a welder!

No. Cut the welds on the adapter, or where the tube is welded to the yolk. Do not cut the tube. If you are reasonably careful in cutting that weld, and don't bugger up the adapter, you will find that there is a land there for the tube to sit on. It makes centering the tube on the adapter a lot easier. It lines up easily. All you need to is make sure you have a plumb cut on the end of the tube when you cut it. If you cut the tube and try to rejoin it, it is very difficult to get the shaft straight without some jigs to set it straight... and then hope it doesn't distort when you weld it. Anyhow, I always cut the adapter out, shorten, and then weld it back in. I have a minimum of stuff to work with for setting it, and this works well. Good luck.

So, if I cut the tube either near the yoke end or the adapter end won't there be weld material in the 'land' as you call it? Can an experienced welder get this all "cleaned up" so the land can be used? I do follow your logic on the difficulty to cut the tube and reweld in the center and keep it all in alignment.

I still haven't been out to the tractor but I'm certain the darn PTO shaft is too long...this old rotary cutter WILL NOT get the best of me!!

When you look at the adapter in the shaft, you should see a slight lip or land right at the weld. I always cut the weld to the land. You don't really cut the shaft tube... just the weld. Once you get the tube off, you should see the depth of the land on the adapter, and you can then grind the remainder of the weld off with a small grinder, and bring the land back to square. Cut the tube to length, fit, then weld.

Anyone that's never had to cut a tube simply hasn't had the need to shorten a shaft. Cutting the bar will do nothing for you if the shaft is so long that it won't go on the tractor.... all it will do is limit the extended length.
