I was wondering about the availability of used fertilizer carts. I farm organic and do not buy from places that furnish carts. I would use it for lime, I am currently using the old drop spreader, but would like to use something that will broad cast. I am just curious as to the cost and if it would be worth it.

We've used Stoltzufus spreaders for many years and they hold up fairly well to wet lime. We don't use them for fertilizer, although there are low rate kits available for them. That said, I still don't quite see them being accurate to very low rates of fertilizer..... It does work well for lime though. I forget what we paid for a used one years ago but it wasn't cheap, and it wasn't in good shape.... but it worked, and we've fixed what was broken. The biggest change I made was to put walking beams under it rather than the stupid spring suspension it had. That was no end of trouble and broken springs. They're simply not rated heavy enough to carry a full load of wet lime.... HTH.

I work for an agonomy business and we have a few Tylers and a few Willmars. They are a royal pain. The box is Stainless but the frames are mild steel. The mild steel componants rust very fast if not washed and I'm not sure washing would help much either. Ours are 5-10 years old and it costs maybe 250 a year in upkeep. We're looking to sell ours and not replace them but with that stainless box, they're worth 30 cents a pound in scrap. That's about 1200 bucks. I'm sure you could find a smaller one for less but I wouldn't get too excited about buying a mild steel one.

Also, as mentioned, these are rated at maybe 600 lb per acre max. Lime would be impractical through them. Likewise, pull type lime spreader aren't very accurate thus not good for fertilizer.

I was looking at the 3point hitch spreaders from Farm and Fleet. Havn't used one myself though. They are not very big, so would't work for big acreages very well. Not too expensive. $300-400 if I remember right.

None of the typical dry-fertilizer buggies are able to handle lime very well. Doors are too small and drives are not heavy enough. Also, by the time any of the plants around here get rid of one, it"s pretty well rusted out. I have an old Mobility that came from CPS for $300. The stainless box was fine, but the carbon steel underframe had to be cut out and rebuilt with new material. It was a lot of work and I wouldn"t redo one again. A good used spreader built specifically for wet lime is going to cost at least $5000.
