Im thinking about buying a round baler to pull with my 1948 Farmall MD i was told the 403F is a good choice for a good cheap baler....My question is how good are they??? I would like to use it to bale grass hay and some cornstalk bales....Would it work good for that or should i be looking at something else??? Does my MD have what it takes to run it properly???

Does anyone know of any operation updates on this baler, We are having trouble starting each new bale. We have 3 nine inch belts and we are manually starting each new bale. The belts are not turning until we load the belt with hay.

Another option for you might be the Hesston 530. It call for 30 hp. I used it on an Oliver S77. Only problem was i was weak on Hyd psi so gate was slow near the top of the stroke. I bought new and have for sale as I'm looking for a JD 535. Hesston has less than 1000 bales thru it. Electric tie and ramps on rear. Sell half of new price. Missouri

I've had a 403F for many years and have been extremely impressed with the durability and I do like the smaller bales. I bale without the hydraulic tension, since the spring alone makes a tight bale. For several years I used my Allis Chalmers WD, which would likely have less hp than your tractor. I could bale down relatively steep ground because the baler held back the tractor. One can also reverse the gear box to reduce the hp requirements, but it does slow the bale rotation. The previous point about live or independent PTO is the key. One needs to feather the baler into a large windrow when starting a bale. Also, start the bale in the center of the pick up. If you have a live or independent PTO- buy it! Mike

I have a 605F I bought as a demo in 1981, it has been a very good baler. I have no idea how many thousands of bales I have baled with it. It has just been sitting in the shed for about 9 years now, since I don"t farm any more. They make a very good bale. They have HYD and spring tenson, and HYD tie. In good hay and good conditions, at 6 MPH I could kick out 25 bales an HR.

The min hp requirement for the baler is 40 hp, your MD is rated at 35 hp, I think that you might be a little bit under powered, that and it would take a great deal of time to lift and lower the gate on the baler. I"m sure that more will replies will pop up

In all the farmall books i have read the MD is always rated about 50 on the PTO???

If it has had a "super" kit installed,and most have by now, it will have about 45-50 HP

Sounds a little high to me?

Also, electric or manual tie would probably be better so it would free up more hyd. power to open the gate.

I think you'll find a round baler awkward to use on any tractor without a "live" PTO.

OK that gives you live power, not as good as fully independent PTO but usable. You probably have enough power if your ground is not hilly. Wide front end would certainly be desirable. I'm really not sure if your hydraulics would be adequate, hopefully someone else can answer that for you.
