Vermeer baler twine arms sticking

Hey guys, need some help on a piece of equipment that I'm not familiar with. I run a J.D. 435 baler and a friend of mine runs a Vermeer 554 XL Round baler. The vermeers twine arms are sticking. They extend to the middle and will not come back. He has replaced the "drive motor" as I would call it, already and now it's doing it again. Any ideas what it could be? I don't know much about this type of baler but I figured someone out there does so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

I've been in Europe for 10 days so I apologize for the delayed answer. There are 3 possible causes for this problem.
1. Adjustment of the twine tube overlap. The twine tubes should never extend beyond over lapping. We usually recommend the tubes stop 1" before separation.
2. Bent twine tie parts. Check the twine tubes, linkage and tie rod ends.
3. The actuator can be sticking causing the motor to burn out quicker that designed. We have the same electric actuators being used that are 25 years old. If a hydraulic actuator have the cushion valve tested. It should hold constant pressure & relieve in the 500-600 PSI range.

If your local dealer can not help you call Vermeer or call Carter & Carter Machinery.

Mine is a vermeer 5400. Occasionally when I run the twine arms all the way in the twine from one arm will get wrapped around the other. When this occurs the twine arms will not retract until the tangle clears the arm.

I try to toggle my twine arms in just far enough for the hay to pick up the twine, then when I see both sides pulling twine I will toggle it all the way in to the center. This seems to help, but it is still not a 100% cure.

I don't know if this is your friends problem? But if it is, next time it sticks on him have him leave the arms where they stick, turn off the pto and the engine and set the parking brake and have a look at the arms and see if the twine( or something else ) is causing the stick.

Did you ever figure out why the twine was crossing over on the vermeer 5400?
I am having the same issue on a 5400, and looking for a solution. The twine arms are not crossing each other, but the twine from the left arm gets wrapped over the right arm.
I tried you suggestion, but it didn't seem to help. Any more ideas?

Does he have a monitor? If so is there any codes that it is giving?

I have a 605 K and I got one sensor that will come off if baling corn stalks and it will not operate the tie arms correctly. All I have to do is plug conector back in and it will work fine

Not familar with his baler, but like Wayne said you can call Vermer and they will help. I bought my baler at auction and called Vermer and they sent out an operator manual to me for free, hard to beat that.

I don't know the cure for your baler problem, but I used to have a 504 SI Vermeer that I put the silage kit in. I had a lot of questions before I did it, and I called Vermeer factory. Very nice, helpful people, and the guy I talked to knew exactly what he was talking about. He told me if ever I had any questions they would be glad to answer them. I suggest that you call Vermeer and explain what is happening to your friend's baler. Ask for service help.
