i am having trouble with a b46 baler. we sharpened the knives, ran it at different speeds, but it still doesn't want to tie. It will tie one and then miss heaps then tie another. It is inconsistent. the needles and grabbing mechanism seem to work fine. Any suggestions?

keep the knives sharp & dont travel too fast . remember these machines are fairly old. we bale 20acres of lucerne with one of these averaging 1000 bales per cut no worries.

I respectfully disagree with dboll. I spent a lot of time behind a 14T John Deere and it's performance made us envey those guys that had IH 45 or 46 balers. That JD just refused to tie bales consistently, despite having a JD mechanic in the field with us and doing everything we (or he) could think of. That baler just refused to tie bales and I still, all these years later, cringe when I see guys saying those 14T or 24T balers were any good.

ok thanks guys. I don't think we can get sisal twine here anymore... im in australia. we have already spaced out the knives. if u turn it over by hand and trip it, it cuts and ties perfect. but when it's actually working, it stuffs up. cant work it out. Does anyone know how much tension is needed on the knotters? I have never seen a jd square baler, only when i looked it up on internet. I think we will go for a new holand 317 or thereabouts because i hear they are good balers. Thanks again guys.

Try adding a couple of small washers between the twine knife and holder both top and bottom. The knifes are not cutting twine completely if at all. And use only good sisal twine plastic won,t work. Run the baler at about 60 strokes per mintue. To fast and it will not work.

I spent the early part of my life riding behind IH balers and the only good one was our 425, as for the 46 sell it and buy a 24T JD!
