hello all,

Sorry if this is not the correct place to post this question, but i didn't know where else to post.

I was just wondering if anybody knows the formula for calculationg the number of bushels of ear corn in a crib? I have two different formulas, but the differ by approx 290 bushels. The crib is a round crib with a diameter of 14 feet and a height of 14 feet. One gives me about 860 bushels while the other gives me about 1150. If you wouldn't mind letting me know what is correct, i would really appreciat your help. Thanks
Greg

Well just to throw a wrench in the works; we always filled em up into the roof too. A cone is the same formula as a cylinder except you divide by 3. I'll let someone else do the math.

Volume of a cylinder = 0.25 x 3.14159 x diameter x diameter x height ~ cubic ft. If you know how many bushels of corn per cubic fot, just multiply that number times the volume.

If I calculated correctly it should be 862 bushels. Hal
PS: 860 is close enough

7x7x3.1416x14x.4=862 bushels

.4 is the right conversion factor from cu.ft. to bushels. i've also seen a factor of .444 for settled ear corn.

There may be a slight difference if you carried Pi
beyond 3.1416 too. It's close enough for government work. May not be so on your income taxes. Hal

its kinda funny you said that. I work some for usda measuring grain. although very seldom ear corn. .4 and .444 are the conversion factors they use. a few other helpful shortcuts: dia = circumference x .3183 area = dia x dia x .7854 cwt = volume x .448 cone = area/3 x ht

My math shows you have 860 bushels of ear corn in the crib.

Find your area and mutiply .4 for ear corn and .8 for shelled corn.

the calculation is for "volume", not "area".

Your right and I realized I used the wrong term but it was to late to change it but I figured he knew what I meant.

One bushel = 1.25 cu ft so 2155 cu ft = 1724 bu or 615 cu ft =492 bu

Volume times point 8 equals bushels of grain. Divide by 2 for bushels of ear corn.

You have about 615 cubic feet of space, if you know how many cubic ft to a bushel there you go.
