My first post seems to be MIA if it pops up sorry for the double post (tried linking to a picture).

Brought home a 12KW IH ELECTRALL PTO Generator last weekend. Looking for info on it and a manual. Found some informative info posted in 1999-2004 on this site and others. No manuals or source for manuals though. The machine appears to be immaculate. Either it was rebuilt or never used. Not even evidence of a plug insertion on the outlets. I'm expecting to need to "re-polarize" the generator at the least. Expect the manual would cover this. Was wondering about the external generator attached to it as well -- and if other owners were charging batteries off theirs(its 12V? not 6V? right) while running it. Thanks Ray

I'd never seen one that PTO driven but have saw several that ran off Belt Pulley... I wanted one bad LOL

my dad saw the original total Electric system IH put together--- Electrall off the belt pully running a cord to an electric motor to pull a haybaler..(before LIVE PTO)

Ray, there is a guy that advertises in the Michigan farm trader that specializes in PTO driven generators that could probably tell you all you need in a five minute phone call. It is (MARTIN ELECTRIC MOTOR) 10116 Cleveland RD. (M57) Carson City Michigan. Phone number (989)584-3850. It says we sell and service most brands of portable, PTO and standby generators. Service center for : Katolite, Generac, Winpower, Winco,Briggs and Stratton, Devilbiss, Northstar, Coleman, Campbell Hausfeld. I am sure he can fix you up. Good luck. Page 202 Michigan farm trader.

Checked what wires I could. Checked belt tensions,gear box,lubed anything that could be lubed. Hooked it up to the tractor .8volts reading on voltmeter AC. Checked what I think is the excitor generator nothing. Its an Autolite CJD 6001A 9K. Will start trouble shooting there.

Got it generating electricity held 120AC steady plugged in a light that was it. Ran it for 5 minutes and shut her down.

There is no field designations on the "excitor" generator. Guessed at flashing the generator a few times. No luck. Took belt off excitor generator (before doing that I made sure I knew proper rotation of the generator) and hooked it up 12volts DC. Spun the generator for about 2 seconds (excitor generator rotating proper direction)
Tried generating AC again no luck.
Hooked up 12VDC again to the excitor generator spun it for 30 seconds maybe a little longer/less and now have 120 AC. Wife came out and said now I can get back to roofing shed,hanging a door and cleaning up mud tracks that lead across house to the computer.

I had one some time ago.You need to excite it from 12volts from the tractor.I think you used a push pull switch attached to the tractor.I"m not sure if I have any info but I"ll look.

Fisrt off, I don't know anything about that particular generator.... so I could be wayyyy off on what I say. However, it seems to me that if this is an AC backup power generator, then you shouldn't have to do anything to it? It's AC so it doesn't have any polarity. From the sounds of things it's just a big alternator with a dc excitor generator. The main generator should work fine I think. The smaller generator would operate on a lower voltage, but I have no idea what that would be. I wouldn't be surprised if it was in the 24 volt range... so yo wouldn't want to go charging batteries on that. HTH.

Don't really have too many answers, but I think the external generator was there to "excite" the windings in the alternator, otherwise you would need a battery in place to accomplish the same thing. The wisconsin historical society has most of old IH records. Might find some info there? Might try binderbooks for the manuals?
