NH and JD Mower Conditioner Info

Am looking at some mower conditioners in an upcoming auction and wondered if anyone had any experience with the following: John Deere 1217, Hew Holland 492, 478, and 488. The 478 is a 7' and looks really good. What should I look for and what $$$ should I expect? Thanks for any info.

I have a 488 and have been happy with it. I do 50 acres with it and pull it with a 3010. Some of my fields are hills and works pretty well.

I have a 1209. Im guessing 1217 is bigger? mine is 9 foot cut. 14 foot corner to corner. (doesntt fit through 12' gate real well, HA! Has arm comes from left side (if sitting on tractor ) which attaches to tractor. Been a great mower/conditioner. I put up 20 acres of Alf and 20 acres brome. Takes me 6 hours to mow alf with my J.D. 3020 in 4th or 5th depending on which cutting. I bought it in 200 for $4200.00 from dealer. hope this helps

JD 1217 is a 7 ft cut,made same period as 1219-9ft cut. Both are good mo-co's just look a rubber on rollers and wobblebox mount to be sure it's not cracked/rewelded. I like NH mo-co's better. Tx Jim

Well, bigger is better. How much hay you got, & how much hp you got to run it, and do you have aweful narrow roads/gates to get through? If favorable answers, the 9 foot models will mean less wasted time & fuel cutting.

I have a JD, I think I'd go for one of the NH models. Nothing wrong with the JD really, but the NH might be a bit better all other thingfs being equal.

Depending on condition, I've seen them sell for $600 - $4000 in my neck of the woods.
