I just bought a 241 baler and was wondering when they were made and if anyone has good or bad to say about them. I haven't went and got it yet I'm on Mich and it is in Al. Should be an interesting and slow ride home.

Thanks Guys, I'm going to get it and will bring it back unless it looks like a complete piece of pile. Guess I may know more next June. I have been square baling, but would like to Round some just to clear the field a bit faster and get the second cut coming on.

A 241 is probably about as good of a round baler as you could buy in the early 70's. Of course you didn't have a lot to choose from. They will bale decently and make good bales. They will not hold a candle to any baler made in the late 70's or 80's. If you are buying it to bale a few bales a year or just play around with, it will be fine. If you are buying it to do over a 100 bales a year, get something newer.

I have 1 that I play with because it is and IH, but when I want to actually bale hay or don't have time to monkey around I use the 1560 Massey or 505I Vermeer.

These were made beginning in the mid 1970's.As others have said bales are hard to start, narrow belts with a lot of leaf loss.

noone likes them - I have I bid $200 for it and noone else bid so I had one -

I am an inventor of sorts - and like to play around with it - I do maybe 20 bales ayear - so it works OK -

I have a few more improvements lined up for mine - I baled all my hay this year with a square baler to sell -

U can email me if u want to discuss it in the future - it is tucked away at my mom's barn for the winter now

keep us posted

What seems to be the issue that they are not liked?

Noone seems to like the closed throat idea where all the hay has to go through a roller vefore it goes in the bale chamber - i have a couple solutions for that and really haven't had that as a problem anyway - my bigges problem is getting the bales started - but i have done several things to make that better now also

so we will see what happens next year

I think I'd leave it there. I doubt its worth the effort to get it home.

That's funny - the fellow in MN who had one for a year sold his to a fellow from Florida. He couldn't believe anyone would drive that far for a such a poor machine....

It's an early model of a new technology, & I beleive it is a closed-throat machine with kinda weakly made frame & spring tensioners.

So, it doesn't feed well, and it is _very_ fussy about the moisture content, and it will not make tight bales that store very well.

I'd watch for a slightly newer machine that has an open throat design & hydraulic tensioning (started with the 605F Vermeer I believe). They can be had for not much more.

I bought my 605F for $1600, saw one sell last year for $800.

bales are hard to start
it winds hay around every shaft if the hay is the least bit damp
easy to get the top belts under the roll without half trying
bales are not tight
probably more reasons but i haven't used the 241 in 7 or 8 years
i consider mine a museum piece, so it sits in the barn and i use a nh.
