What Do You Pull a 4 Row Planter With?

I am wondering what people use to pull a 4 row planter with. I am talking about something like a JD 7000, White 5100, or IH 800. Also what type of equipment are on the planters. I realize the air planters would require the pto pump. I was just wondering if I could use an 88 Oliver on something like this.

Back in the early 70's I pulled my JD 494A, dry fertilizer, insect., herb. boxes full with my Oliver 77. No problem with pulling or lifting!

I always used a 5600 Ford (62 or so hp) and had plenty for a 4 row Kinze notil.

We pull a 495A with our 1600. The only concern I would have with an 88 is being able to lift the planter, but i would think a cylinder with a larger bore would make it work ok. Would be a little slower to lift though. We want to find a 7000 or something before next spring, but it probably won't happen yet....

A 7000JD will work great with a Super 77, other than the hydraulics can't lift it when it's full of fert. Woulda been plenty of pulling power - 4 row, dry fert.

Found that out the hard way.

Whatever you have with dual hydraulics. You need one set for lift/lower and the other for markers. A 4020 with single hydraulics will sell for a lot less for this reason - planters and loaders.

JD 7000 works fine with one remote hydraulic valve, if that is all that is available. Planter is made to work with the markers dropping alternately with only one remote. With a second remote you plumb a second hose to run the markers separately.

I've never seen a planter set up like that but there's a whole lot I haven't seen. Our 7000 and 7200 are set up with 3 lines. 2 lift and lower the planter and one runs the markers. The lift and lower doesn't need a two-way cylinder now that you mention it, but that's what we have on ours.

Since you already have some JD planters- check the op manual where setting up the planter is explained. (Attaching to tractor). Shows the hose setup. One disadvantage is that if the wrong marker will come down you need to raise and lower the planter to switch sides. With a separate marker hose you can keep planting and just raise and lower the marker to switch. When the 7000 came out in 1974, many farmers had tractors with only one remote.

Yes the markers can be on the same hose as the lift, but that makes the markers hit the ground 20 or 30 feet from the end of the row and I found I don't have pointy guess rows now that I've separated the marker hose from the lift hose.

The only problem with the older tractors is hydraulic capacity. My friend tried to pull me AC no-till with his M. He had plenty of pulling power but couldn't lift the planter loaded with fertilizer. I don't know about the hydraulics on an 88.

I pull my 4 row JD 7000 that has Dawn trash wheels, no fertilizer, factory stock closing wheels with my MF-135. Doesn't even open up the governor. About 35 hp maximum but it doesn't need it.
