Rental on Hay Equipment

I am thinking about renting out my hay equipment for round bales to a man and I am trying to figure out what would be a fair price. Here we charge $20.00 a roll to cut rake and roll and I was thinking about charging him $5.00 a roll and he furnish all the fuel labor and any repairs that the equipment needs. Would that be a fair price considering the equipment would depreciate to nearly nothing and I will have to replace the equipment once it gets used up? He would operate it like it was his, if he does regular maintainance that would help him in repairs but if he had a major breakdown he could say here is your equipment and I would be stuck with it. Thanks

not that's it's all that bad of an idea, but it really depends on how well you know this guy, and how well he maintains his equipment. Personally, I'd insist on running it myself if it's a friend of a friend.

We do borrow forage wagons and some other peices of equipment form a neighbor once in a while, but we make sure to grease them up, check the tires, and in the case of a disc we borowed this year, I had to fix the channel tube on the axel for the right wheels. I made a new peice to weld onto the axel pipe. I bought 2 thicker peices of channel iron, welded them together, then brought them to school on a CNC and punches 2 holes on each side for the 2 tubes that slide through it. Just took time and maybe $50 in materials for me, others aren't so lucky.

If $20. is the going rate for custom haying in your area, then personally I`d have to have $40. to let someones else tear up my equipment. No, on second thought, I don`t believe that would be quite enough. Personally I`d stay away from such an arrangement at any price.

The rental price seems OK, BUT I think you are entering a really risky business venture. One man's idea of maintenance is not always the same as another's methods. I see equipment all the time that is not worn out, its torn up by sloppy operators and poor maintenance. Some folks idea of reparing something is just patching it in the worst way. At the end of the rental, how are you two going to agree on what is fair wear and tear, and what needs major repairs and replacement parts? How well do you know the person, and have you seen his equipment? Be careful. Tom
