SpeeCo post hole digger is on sale at my local Big R ag. store. Are these type of small inexpensive diggers good? I've never used a 3pt digger befor. The auger is 99 bucks more. Will use on an 8N. Any advise?

I have a Leinbaugh 7300 that I have used for about 120 post holes so far in gumbo clay and I am very happy with it. I paid about $400.00 for it with an auger of choice (6", 9" or 12"). When I had it behind my Kubota L175 (17 HP) it got hung up often in the clay and took a lot of time to get out. Now I use it behind my Long 350 (35 HP +-)and I have only stuck it once and was able to work it out in about 5 minutes. I started out with a 6" auger and changed to a 9" one. The 9" one gives a lot more wiggle room to get the post (4" wood) aligned better. Just follow the safety rules and stay on the tractor.

Well, depends on if you are buying for a one time use for a bunch of holes or will be using it quite ofter. Unless you will be really using it alot all year long I would recommend renting a skid loader with one attached and have you holes marked and ready to go. About $170.00 for 24 HOURS with 12 hours on the meter. I know melroe augers are strong and you cant beat the speed you will get moving from hole to hole. JMHO

I bought one from TSC. On sale at less than $400 with the 12" auger if I remember correctly. Haven't set any post yet. But have planted several trees with it and buried one dog. Digs my blackland soil very well. Use it by myself never getting off the tractor and near the auger. One hand on the PHD handle, one hand on the 3PT handle. In fact, I had to be careful it did not auger in too fast. For the trees, I dig 4 holes in a square almost touching and then one in the middle. A little cleaning with a shovel and drop the tree in. The dog took 6 holes in a rectangle since I built a box for her.

Well, years ago I bought a Ford 90 hp gear box digger for over $3000. If I had to do it all over I would never buy one. I can't dig through the hard ground in the summer, if you are near tree roots it gets stuck and you have to dig it out, the augers are cheap and bend real easy and won't dig any more. A buddy of mine put up a bunch of fence and went to home depot and rented a self propelled digger, looked like a mini skid steer loader. Came complete with a trailer, a set of really thick walled augers that you could move back and forth and would not bend, had a reverse on it, and tons of down pressure. Even saw a commercial fence guy go and rent one because his tractor mounted digger would not dig. I think it only costs $200 for that day.

I bought a 3pt digger at TSC a few years back. I got the 12 in auger, so I don't have to be as accurrate with it. I never leave the seat when I use it. If you ever got caught in the thing, it would screw right thru ya, be a terrible way to die. Slow too....

Get a pair of good hand diggers, they won`t cost as much but will be less frustrating than one of those disposable diggers you are talking about.

I don't know how different a Speeco digger is from a $500 (with augar) from TSC is, but the one I have has done quite well by me. I use it on my John Deere M in clay and hardpan with rock and gravel thrown in whether wet or dry and it's done good. Of course if you put it on a 100 horse tractor and ream on it, you might realize lessor results.

Don't hold me to this but I think Speeco makes them for TSC. Seems like I remember getting parts directly from them for it a good while back.
Someone correct me on this if I'm wrong.

I got one of those pieces of junk. They do ok if you're digging in sandy ground or it's wet (rain). Down here where I live, if it's dry only a heavy weight digger will dig a hole. The ground down here gets really hard if it's dry. If you decide to go with the Speeco, get plenty of those replacement blades for the auger. They wear pretty fast and it won't cut hot butter after that. My opinion, I wish I would have spent more on a better hole digger but I have survived with it and almost got all the holes I'm planning on digging done. I pick and chose the time I use it (used in wet ground only now). Another thing, I ran mine on an 8N before I sold the N and didn't have trouble other than hard ground with the N. Run it on a JD 5105 now. I've got a neighbor that's got one made by Bush Hog and it seems to be a better built machine. It's a good bit heavier (weight) and cuts faster. Understandable though.
Be safe and have fun making those holes. Please do not get around that PTO shaft while that thing is working. I have pushed down on mine while it was digging but we did it with an iron bar placed aross the boom so neither of us was near the shaft. Three people there. Two on the bar, one on the tractor with hand on the PTO engage/disengage lever just in case. Heard some horrible stories about people getting caught in them and I don't want to try it.
Good luck,
mee
