Horsepower for a Mower Conditioner

I know this is a broad question: what horsepower does it take to run a sickle bar type mower conditioner? I know it depends on size, make, etc. I have an Oliver 88 and 1550 to choose from. Both about 50 hp. Thanks.

I bought an Owatonna (OMC) 229 9"3" haybine this year and pull it with my Farmall Super M. Tractor weight is the biggest help on these South IN rolling hills. My IH 504U is pushed around by it a little. Both have about 45 HP, but the Super M is much heavier and handles it better.

Yup, 9'r easy. I did some cutting with my 1600 this spring on our New Idea 290 (9') and could hardly tell it was back there. We just got a bigger 14' Hesston 1014+2 hydraswing and we run it on a worn out Massey 285, I'd guess it pushes maybe 75 HP right now. We use the 1855 on it when the sun gets too hot, that one's got a canopy overhead and pushes 105 on the dyno. It just plays with the thing.

Farmall H and a NH 469. Live PTO would"ve been nice but it worked even in the thick stuff, just had to slow it down.

Did that for two seasons, even baled with that tractor pulling a NH S67 baler.

I have since moved to an Oliver 1800 for my chore duties. I occassionally use a MM Jetstar to cut and bale with but it doesn"t run the equipment near as well as that Oliver.

My wife had our other workhorse tied up baling so I put the 7' NH472 on the IH 300 Utility and went cutting. No problems. Ran fine up and down hill.

We have run a 7' New Idea for years with an Oliver 550. Had some electrical problems with the tractor, so I had to use my Super H... never mowed easier or faster! I think torque helps alot more than HP in a lot of situations. Pull the manure spreader with the Super H also...550 can't move it. Used to disk with an Oliver 1600 until my father was bailing with it and there was disking to get done - weather moving in. Hooked up the Super H... never disked with he 1600 again.Flat out pulled it. Torque beats HP in my book. Mike

I've seen a 12' CaseIH 8350 run on a 42 hp Ford 3910. The Ford probably weighed around 5500 #. Power wise it ran it, but not overly fast. It would be a very heavy load in all but the best conditions with the mower well tuned. I would say that with 50 hp you would be quite safe with a 9' mower...

Used a neighbor's New Holland 7' haybine/mower conditioner cutting pretty tall haygrazer (sorghum sudan). Pulled it with my John Deere 5105 (~45 pto hp). Flat ground. Didn't know it was even back there. 4th gear, not sure what the ground speed for that gear. That was the first time I had pulled one of those things and man, after using it, I've got to have one of them. Looking now for one about that size. Impressive machines.

You can cut hay with anything I suppose, but in my experience, ANYTHING less than 45hp, the tail is wagging the dog. Heavy hay, hills, slippery...little tractors are inadequate.

I was always told 5hp per foot. However, I was also told that the tractor need to be a min of 15% heavier than the mower. In other word don't plan on using a 7' 2500lb mower behind a 35hp 2500lb Ford hundred series. Working on some hilly ground here I wouldn't use my 1209 on any less than a 5000lb tractor.

Sounds like you can use just about any machine up to 9'.

Either tractor has plenty of power for a 9' moco, but the 88 may have trouble lifting some mowers if the hydraulics aren't in top shape.

It depends some on how fast you pull the mower conditioner, but I've pulled my Hesston PT-10 cutting 9'3" in tractor high alfalfa at 5 to 6 mph with my 35 hp MF-135.

I used to run a N.H. 467 behind a International super c, it was only a 7 foot machine but didn't seem to take much h.p. A uncle used to run a cockshutt 30 with his but I don't remember what size his mower/conditioner was. Now both myself and a neighbour run 9 footers with less than 50 h.p. You will also have to have a couple of remotes to run the header and swing the hitch.

I pull a NH460 9 foot cut MOCO behind my Oliver 77 and it does real good with it so you should have any problems with either one of those since they are bigger then this 77
