Sharpening blade on buzz saw

I have a 1930s buzz saw that my grandad bought for my dad new for his wedding present in winter 1940. Ive never sharpened the blade, always had sombody do it for me. Cant find anybody now around Tulsa, so gotta try again myself. My question is, if, say, a tooth causes me to place the file on a slant to the right to shaarpen it, assuming the blade is still on the saw, to set the tooth should I hammer it to the left or right?

check out the link on the post above this one.it has a section on tools for sharpening saw blades.has a setting tool so you dont have to hammer on the tooth.just remembered i copied the link

Unless you've battered the saw beyond recognition you should be able to tell by looking but since you can't you have a long row to hoe.
Looking at the tooth the point should be angled to the blade center. The set will then be bent outward. Alternate the direction of the adjacent teeth. When you sight along the tips you should see a 'V.'
Be patient, it takes practice.

To bad your not closer to where I am. The guy just up the road from me shapens saw blades as a side line
