Sounds like you survived but the recovery will take awhile don't rush things , do what the doctor tells you . I went through a Achilles
tendon operation a couple years back the doctor said I did a number on it , took him about 5 hours to repair & me 12 weeks before I could put any weight on it , The sitting waiting for it to heal was the hardest part . most days I do OK but still have trouble with leg tighting up Use electric shock to losen up works good . Hang in there things will get better " sometime ".

Well, Im still here, and the leg hasnt rotted off yet so thats the good news, lol. Go for preop tomorrow, they talked me into delaying the surgery for a week, said there was too much damage to the tissue to seal it up in a cast so if the pined it all last week I would have to ear a halo bloted to the bone for 12 weeks, the lots of physical therapy. Or I could wait till it healed up and they would go in and fix it.

Heres the verdict: ACL and PCl are severed, MCL and LCL are torn and the LCL is attached to a free floating piece of tibia bone. 5 tendons in the calf, some nerve grafts, and some bone pins and I should be good as can be fixed. Wont ever play sports again, but I didnt do much of that before. Just glad to be here.

Thanks for checking... I posted this on another forum Im on. Its what Ive learned since I learned that being eaten by a machine is no fun....

Today I learned that there are a lot of people all over the world, who I havent had the pleasure to meet face to face that care about me.

Thank you for the well wishes.

1. There are no drugs that can make some pain bearable, sometimes all you can do is scream.

2. I am eternal debt to the vol fire dept, they beat EMS to me by 30 mins, kept me from going into shock, comfortable and carried me (and at 6'1" and 240 thats a job by itself) and the stretcher 100 yards from where I got hurt to the ambulance so I wouldnt have to bounce through gravel. I appreciate the EMS people, they were great and took wonderful care of me but they were getting paid, those 20 volunteer firemen werent.

3. Modesty goes out the window real fast when you are stuck to using a bedpan

4. Learning to walk again sucks

5. I took my mobility and independence for granted.

6. I've got friends all over the world that for too long I have taken for granted. Im sorry, and thank you, all of you, for you words of well wishes and concern.

7. Prune juice is gross

My goal (which may differ from what the Doc and physical therapists think) is to try to go back to work the week after Thanksgiving, with a secondary goal of Christmas if that doesnt happen. They seem to think part time first of the year is reasonable.

Hang in there man!!! in reply to kyhayman, 10-23-2006 21:27:54
I've been in more casts and on crutches more than I care to remember. Broke my tibia and fibula several years ago. I had hardware inside my leg for several years. Then in another accident and had a complete acl tear. I was so relieved that I did not break the bone again. The doctor said if I did it would of shattered it with all the hardware I had in it. When they replaced my acl I had all that hardware removed also.

I never did have trouble with bones hurting with changing weather. My knee does get a little tighter when it gets cold now.

One important word for you to work on when your doctor and therapists say it is ok, FLEXIBILITY. I know it will(and does) hurt like a SOB but work on that range of motion.

Hang in there! It will get better for you.

I pray for a speedy and complete recovery for you.

bones will heal if you are still alive in reply to kyhayman, 10-23-2006 21:27:54
and you will be better than the weather man at predicting the weather from now on. A positive mental attitude is the best medicine you can have and your goals are a good start. Keep your head up and fight though it is the best way sometimes, despite the pain that no drugs will touch.

My wife has lived with the results of a shattered leg for many years. From experience I can tell you that the nerve damage is going to take a long time to heal and there is a possibility that the damage may lead to RSD (CRPS) or other neuro-stimulative issues. For your sake I wish you a speedy and trouble-free recovery.

As far as the pain goes there are some good new drugs that are becoming available that may be of benefit to you in the recovery period. Drop me a line if you want to hear more.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

You bet! Gods blessing not only for a complete and fast healing, but also for patience! For a guy like you that never let the grass grow very long under his feet, putting up with the recovery time is usually the hardest part.
I hope Your time is minimal!
