JD FB-A grain drill parts

I'm looking for a source of parts, operator's and parts manual for a JD FB-A grain drill. I'm trying to rescue this old implement from the scrap heap. It is mostly complete, but is missing some seed chutes and needs a couple of gear hangers that were damaged when the prior owner attempted to pull it out of the barn while the drill was still engaged and after it had been sitting for years unused. None of the gears were damaged, but the hanger is toast. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. I have to admit to owning six old red and gray tractors, but I just couldn't stand to see this fine old piece of farming equipment end up melted down by some Chinese weapons manufacturer. I've talked to the old Fords and they have agreed to enthusiastically welcome the new green and yellow addition to the implement fleet. Thanks in advance. Jerry

Thanks for all of the replies and information. The drill is definitely an FB-A. I'll visit the local JD dealership to see if they can get me the parts and operator's manual. Does anyone know if stencils are still available for the script on these old drills? I can still read the John Deere and Van Brunt, but the model and serial numbers, as well as the patent information is but a ghost in the faded green paint. The drill setting sheets on the inside of the bin lids are like new. I can't wait to get it all cleaned up and running again. Then I can start on the 14-T baler and JD-350 side delivery rake that came with the drill. Thanks again for the info.

Go to Deere and get a parts manual. I have an FB and they still make or I can get 60 percent of the parts I need from them. If you get a parts manual you can carbon date the drill to what year it was made - the serial numbers wern't really applied with care on those puppies - my dril is 516 and I've seen three with that number on the back.

He needs to make sure it's FB-A. Not FB, FB-B, FB-C or FF. 5 different operators manuals and 4 different parts catalogs! No one seems to know when they were made exactly or cares but there were different versions using different parts.

the FB-A should have a larger grain box and the fertilizer bin shouldn't have the curved plates (if I remember correctly) like the FB, but they should be more angular.

If it is rounded and has yellow lids, its an FB-B. Last time I checked some of the FB-As did get traditional serial numbers on a metal tag on the left hand side of the drill. The earlier ones were stenciled with a serial number towards the middle and should read for example FB 157 A Serial Number 516.

The FB was produced from 1946 to 1952 and the FB-A from 1952 to I think through the 2-cly 20 series with the FB-B made during the New Generation 10 series. I could be wrong but I think thats how the breakdown is.

Several versions of the FB drills and they might all be covered in a manual from JD but I'm thinking there are more manuals so be sure to have the exact model and number off tag on grain box. JD publications will still have manuals on paper or CD, 800-522-7448. Some parts are available from JD yet but many only used from salvage units or NOS. Try Burrells JD in Oklahoma for parts. http://www.burrells.net
