I have a 5' Kingkutter Hayside is a medum duty mower mostly cut grass & small bushes 1" to 2"
use with Ford/New Holand 1715 - 27 HP . if you use for cutting grass they have one with two wheels on back that cuts more even .

I like the galvanized one. Modern. More bang for your buck.

If you don't mind used, go to farm sales and look for a brush hog. I bought a good 5' John Deere for $25, put another $20 into it and have been using it for 5 years. It's been through a LOT of 2"-3" trees and still keeps going. It was probably 35 years old when I got it. MOST of my "rough" cutting is over, so it doesn't have to work so hard now! 8^)

If you want a really heavy duty cutter that uses less power, get a super heavy duty Alamo flail mower. These used to be called Mott flails. They are expensive but if you hit a rock or something the blades swing in all directions so you don't wreck something. They are safer than a rotary because they throw everything into the top housing and then it lays down behind the rear roller. They look more like a rototiller but are extremely durable. John Deere and Ford made flails but they are no comparison. They even make an Interstater model that cuts up to 21ft. wide for doing highways etc. Dave

flail mowers are not worth a flip in brush/light trees. only good for grass. beside flail mowers are very high maintence items and very pricey. just go price the knives on them. bush hog type ROTARY cutters are the best all around mowers for all types of cutting and are low maintence items and blades can be sharpened many times. rotary cutters are about 1/3 cost of flail mowers. get a BUSH HOG or RHINO brand for long service and easy parts availability.

I have an ancient 5 ft Brady Flail that does a supurb job chopping heavy, very old sage brush and 5" dia cedar trees into little chips. Does a much better job than my Brillion rotary. The flail you're referring to probaby has those light, almost sheet metal style cutters. Mine has 1/4" thick steel knives that'll grind up almost anything.

All it said on the post was heavy duty cutter. It didn't say what was being cut. If it is only heavy grass flails use less horsepower than a rotary and the heavy duty blades last a long time. If you are cutting trees and brush then a brush cutter is better. I've seen a heavy duty flail cut 3 to 4 ft. tall grass down to 3.5 inches in one pass. Try that with a rotary. Flails are expensive but are very good at what they were designed for. Dave

sorry, i misunderstood your comment. you are right about the flail , though. i always use a rotary for everything from finish mowing to cutting hay so it's all i need.

If you just gone use it real hard for along time the Rhinos and Bushhogs do great.
If you gone abuse and beat the snot out of it and expect the impossible from it then get a Brown's Tree Cutter. You will need to bring some real money and horsepower to the party if you want to play at Mr. Brown's house.

Woods or Brushog brands. Both are very good.

Just bought a new 6' heavy duty Bush Hog and like it. Taylor-way makes a good one , uses 1/4 steel plate on deck, but you have enough tractor to pick up the cutter. Also get a brand that has good local dealer support.
