PT-10 key removal question

I have two pulleys to remove that have square keys with a head. I guess you would call them drive-in keys. I imagine they are tapered to get tight. How do I get them out? I'm in the process of installing a brand new bottom roll. The sealed bearings only lasted 32 years.

Got them out. Big key took a slide hammer, little one broke off and had to be drilled. Either way, they are out. Thanks fellows.

Hopefully you have a little space behind the pulley. Find a piece of pipe that will fit over the shaft and rest solidly against the hub. If you have to, slit it to fit around the key. Then give it a few shots with a big hammer, the pulley should move inward enough to release the key, then you can pry it out or use a pair of wedges to remove it. I have also gotten desperate enough to drill most of the key out, then collapse the rest of it with a small chisel.

In theory the tapered key comes right out when you slip a pry between the pulley and the head of the key. In tough cases (rusted and the hammer applied aa bit too much when it was last installed) that's not enough and then you have to sometimes get some Kroil around the shaft and then move the pulley in, to release the key.

I saw a thread somewhere else where it was suggted that welding or drilling the head of the key to hook it to a slide hammer worked well at releasing the stuck key.
