Ok, I got these two model "L" spreaders I drug home from the weeds a couple months ago. I managed to get the first one all freed up and working (PB BLaster is WONDERFUL stuff). All I need now is 2 tires (20x 7.50) and the wood . I will probably hunt for tires for awhile, since that size is hard to come by. Anyone know what wood is used in the floor and sides? I ASSUME Oak, but not real sure. I'm not restoring these things, just fixing them up to use. I was thinking about using treated 3/4" plywood , but am not sure. How long would pine last if it was sealed good? Any thoughts?

Ok, Thanks, guys! I'll see what I can come up with. The other spreader I have is just like this one. It has the adapter plates on the rims to allow the use of truck rims. I'll have to try and see what I can get to fit one of them.

I had a model L and was unable to mount truck 6-ply tires on the rim. There wasn't enough room for the heavier beads. Couldn't afford a new tire so I put a mounted truck wheel beside the JD wheel and welded some strap steel in 4 places to hold it there. Didn't even dismount the tire, ran it that way for years.

When I rebuilt the floor on my John Deere spreader I used treated plywood, it worked great and was a lot easier to put in then a bunch of planks.

when I was looking for 7.50x20s for my hay trailer I ended up getting 8.25x20s instead. If you change both it should work ok and they are a bit easier to find.

Southern Yellow Pine 1"x6" T@G would be my choice. This is typical for Machinery use. I most certainly would not use any kind of Plywood and Oak is a poor choice "In my opinion".John

Try checking your local junkyard for the tires or a savlage yard that handles older trucks. We have some here in my area. You never know what your going to find when you visit one of these. Good Luck

The JD chuckwagons used T&G Southern Yellow Pine, and I think that"s what was also in our L. I"d use treated lumber if I were doing one. Tires are still available new in spreader traction tread according to my tire dealer, but they aren"t cheap. Somebody told me there is a metric truck tire that is really close, but I don"t remember what it is offhand.

M E Miller Tire has the tires you are looking for. Of course will cost you 3x what you paid for spreader. I have two of these spreaders and replaced wood with 1" T&G. Works great.
