I need opinions about this baler and if there is any specific wear points or parts I need to check closely. A neighbor has one to sell and I am thinking about it for a back-up. Thanks for your help.

i had one that was a very good baler, made good square bales. the 271 was the same baler with a longer tongue and pto shaft, so the tractor could stay farther from the windrow. i offset the 4010 drawbar one hole on my 270 to miss the hay. shovelman has the wear points listed.

We have one and it has been a great baler. Very reliable and even though it is old, most parts are still available. The only downside is a fairly narrow pickup and a tongue that needs to be longer. You will find yourself driving on the windrow if you have a larger tractor.

Things to look for: Check the tinwork for rust holes, especially where the feeder forks push the hay into the chamber. Also, check the ball bearings on the plunger, pickup and feeder.

We also added 2 hay wedges in chamber (for a total of 4) to make tighter bales. Our 270 baled over 8000 this year with only 1 minor hiccup.

Good luck,
Scott
