IH McCormick M Grain Drill

I have recently purchased an IH McCormick model M grain drill. Serial number: 603357R91-M. Wondering what year this was built so I can find a corresponding operators and parts manual. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!!! Matt Weltz

The Model M was made in both "flute" and "double run" feed. Also had the option for dry fertilizer. Fertilizer models were designated MF. It was availabe in 6,7,8,&10 inch spacings. Production of the M and MF began in 1949

What is the difference between flute and double-run drills? Mine has a large and small grass seed box, an alfala box and a fertilizer box (4 total boxes). It has 18 double-disk openers set on 7" spacings. Rubber tires and hydraulic lift. Would this mean it is a later model? As mentioned earlier, serial number is 603357R91-M. Will any manual that covers M or MF drills comply with my drill? Thank you!!!

Double run seeds more accurately, but is more expensive to build. If you have a double run, each seed tube will have two openings, one will be for larger seed and the other side for smaller seed. The IH M drill will have a hinged cover which can "swing" both ways to either cover the large or small seed run. The fluted feed has only one opening "cup" for the seed tube. I have an IH MF with double run and grass seed attachment.

My parts manual lists the 18 x 7 fluted as being built between '49 - '59 and the double - run as '49 - '60. Have no way of narrowing it down for you though. The double - run will have a large gear on the countershaft with a smaller gear running on it to adjust seed output, the fluted does not have this. We have one of each(although the D/R drill is for parts) and this is the most noticeable difference. My manual is # SM - 201 and covers several different models from 1939 - 1961.

Thanks for the help. Mine has two big tubes going to each disk openener so it must be a double-run model MF. One tube is for the main seed box and the other is for the fertilizer box. It then also has a smaller tube for the alfalfa box. The four box is then behind the disk openers and just drops the seed straight to the ground. Thank you for the help!!!

It would be a MF as the M was a seed only no fertilizer drill and the small box on the back would be a later model add on as the only grass seed box was the one mounted on the front. Do have the owners manuals around here someplace for both the M & MF drills, used a 13-7 single disc opener MF for years, then got a Deere, bought a MF double disc a few years ago to rebuild but havent yet got it done. What I always thought was the double run was the seperate tubes for the fertilizer and wheat, with the single run using the same tube for both, both that I have had have the single tube and both have had the grass seed box on the front, seen one once that had the low rear mount grass seed box, was in a scrap yard, wanted to get the box but did not make it to. And Both drills I have had had the 2 cups in the box with a moveable cover to put on one or the other depending on seed type or you could put a cover over both openings to seed 14", 21" or 28" rows. Never seen a McCormick with the other type seed drop but that is what my Deere has and I do not like the Deere. Both the McCormic were clutch lift but I do have here the parts to convert to hydrolic lift. A 13-7 was standard around her with a few 15-7 but nothing bigger.
