Just a quick note to say thanks for the responses to my request 2 days ago..... .I wrote to say I think the reason the knife is not cutting right is that the non-clog guards work great in alfalfa but lousy in grass...my neighbor has a 1209, cuts fast ( 5 MPH )with the standard guards in most grass conditions. I have mine level on the ground running @ 1.5 inches on the skid plates. At 4 MPH it pushes over the grass with ragged cuts. Belt is tight, hold down clips are set properly according to the book,new blade, so the guards are the only thing I see at the moment that could be affecting the cutting job. I am open to any other thoughts, It must be something simple.....

I checked strokes per minute, 3 strokes per 1 revolution of the PTO which is correct ( 1650 SPM)

What type of knives are you using? Underserrated or just the cutting edges serrated. I have a 1219 with no clog gaurds and the underserrated knives. It is unstoppable in grass! Are your guards worn?

Thanks, Matt, I'll check the guards closer for wear. I am usng underserrated sections. I may have to tighten down more on the hold downs to the point just before the bar won't move.

I thought from an earlier post you had new guards?

The cutting edges of the guard should be somewhat sharp. If they are like a piece of smooth wire (rounded) it is time to replace. Those cutting edges are heat treated and wear quite well, but when rounded they will not cut, nor will any guard.

Yes the holddowns need to be quite close. Use the folded dollar bill for a feeler gauge.

My knife is new, the guards are not, the closer I look, the more I realize I do not have the holdowns tight enough letting the grass bunch & jam.

I agree with Matt. I forgot in my note below to mention types of sections.

Overserrated works well in big stemmy crop (Alfalfa, sorghum) but underserrated works better in grass. And you can sharpen them without loosing the serrations.

The only way to compare two machines is to be in the same field at the same time. then start comparing setting as below.

Other items to check. Guard angle, reel speed, Reel belt tension, and actual cut height.

Anything will cut alfalfa.

Non-clogs were specifically designed for grass conditions to include mouse nests, down crop, wet crop.

The newer thinner guards do well, but when it gets tough, you cannot beat non-clogs.
