I would appreciate hearing some suggestions for used, small round balers. I am thinking of purchasing one before the next haying season. I have a 55 hp tractor. All ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thank You!

Avoid small round bales. They loose too much to weather. The larger bales will loose a lower % of try matter than smaller ones if you insist on using rounds. If you use small rounds then cover them.

Any Vermeer 504 would be fine I have pulled my 605F with my 460D 52 HP, I didn"t say it was ideal just had to be at the time.

Where are you located in NC? A lot of the newer mid sized round balers don't use that much HP. Have you looked at a Hesston?

I am about 15 miles west of Greensboro. I want to get some ideas as to what is available and opinions of those who have used them. There is a NH dealer nearby, but I am not sure about other brands. There will be some auction sales before next spring. I want to reaearch all the possiblities.

Sounds like you are pretty close to Kernersville Farm Equipment. They deal in used stuff mostly, Last time I was there they had a older New Holland and a Hesston on the lot. The Deere dealer in Salisbury has a Vicon and a NH on the lot, but they have been there a while.

I know the fellows at Kville Farm Equip. I have bought a few parts and small items from them over the years. They have stuff that has been there for years. For a long time, they mainly wanted to sell Green tractors. I was there one day and their yard contained alot of Red ones(mainly IH). Being a troublemaker, I asked if they had changed their feelings toward other brands. The reply was that since there was alot of red ones around here they needed to get a share of that business even though they were still not the best tractors. I guess they think know what they are talking about, but in the past when talking with them about a problem or an idea, it was their way or no other way. I repaired a tractor once for about $125.00 and if I had followed their instructions, it would have cost several hundred, probably more than it was worth. If I asked them about a baler, they would tell me that whatever they had would be the best one that I could find and I would be wasting my money and time if I bought any other brand. I know they are trying to sell something, but it is the tone of their salesmanship that I and other locals do not like. Sorry for going off topic, but all I want is info, not a lecture. Let me make up my own mind. Are you in NC, too?

I've got a vermeer 503I 3'x5' uses 40 pto/hp late eighties baler with less than 2000 bales rolled with it for sale. Barn kept and looks new. Can send pictures. Located in southwest Michigan.

I have a vermeer 403F, which has been and still is a fine machine- overbuilt, trouble free, but no longer made. Parts availability have not been an issue. It makes a 4 ft tall 3 ft wide bale.

What tractor do you have?? Believe me it does make a differance. I pull an old NH 850 baler behind my Oliver Super 88 which is rated at around 55HP and it plays with it. The baer makes bales 5-1/2X5-1/2 so thats one of the biggest there was ever built.

Old, I have a Kioti DK55 turbo. I use a 435 International square baler now and the tractor does not know it is there. Thanks for your response. A neighbor uses a Nh baler, maybe an 848, behind a 471 MF, 62 hp tractor.

Do a search on this board for Vermeer 504. Your tractor would run one of those very well. I know there are some other brands and models which are similar in size ( 4x5 ) but if you search a bit for round baler you will find the previous posts about them...
