A little late in the year but I haven"t been able to cut since mid-august, due to our September Monsoons. I really need the hay.

Anyone else still looking to cut??

Im planning for Oct 13 to start on mine or the first window with 48 hrs forcast dry after that. We've had 11.5" this month, and I dont want to get on the ground. Lots of good alfalfa will be going into stretch film for silage. I hate to lose it, sitting here with less than a 1000 square bales left but.... breaks of the game.

Cutting on Saturday in reply to Joe in IN, 09-27-2006 07:05:25
If it doesn't rain too hard on Friday. AND it blows over Saturday morning, I will cut orchard grass fields that afternoon. Then bale on Monday evening before the dew sets in. Sunday and Monday are looking like sunny and dry. Pray for windy too.

Waiting on the alfafa field until good long window or after the freeze....

I am in east central Missouri, and I am in the same boat. NWS gives me a rain free forcast after 1 pm today until at least next wednesday, so I am going to cut tomorrow afternoon. I have a little ten acre field that'll make 800-900 squares and I have a lot of customers wanting more, so I am gonna do it. It is mainly orchard grass/clover mix. I am not going to mess with my other fields this late in the year, they'd all make some hay, but I'm only gonna cut the best stuff. Supposed to be 67 tommorow, 75 saturday and sunday, 86 on Monday! Then back down in the 70's tuesday and wednesday, so I think I'll be all right. Good luck, and God bless, I'll be thinkin about you guys when I'm out makin hay. It's hard to beat the happy feeling I get when I am out baling squares and see those $3.50 bales coming out of the baler one after the other!

I`m in the same boat !! I can pasture alot of it and I`ve got enough rounds to get me through but I`ve got a field of alfalfa I`d like to get the 4th cutting off of in small sq. for calves and penned up animals . At noon monday the weatherman said 40% chance of rain on thursday so I took a chance and layed some sudan grass down , 5 hrs. later the report was rain starting wed. and through the weekend and thats what it`s doing . On the bright side I got the new gutters on the barn just in time !!

I'm still hoping for Sunday, if the weather cooperates at all. We only got 2 inches here in Northern Dearborn County last time, and it's raining again now. I don't know how a hilltop can be as wet as our hayfield is.

I have been waiting to cut 4th cutting also. I cut a 2 acre patch of alfalfa Sunday afternoon and baled yesterday small squares. Rain was in the forcast today and that it did. We had some hail as well. I have it on edge spaced out and salted it down. It made about 45 bales. I will see if it amounts to anything. It is getting late and I am not seeing a good dry 3 to 4 day window. It doesn't cure with the cooler temps we are going to have. If I see good window the first of Oct. I may try another couple of acres.

Good Luck

Not Indy, but here in S. Michigan its been raining now for over a month. It stops for at most two days before another comes in. Haven't been able to cut a bit of hay since before mid August. Sold everything I had from earlier cuttings as I always winter over on the last cut.
Going over to a fella I know who has a bigger operation this week and buy a few bales to tide me over until we get a dry week. If it never comes I will be buying winter hay for the first time in a lot of years.

Exactly....and it isn't just us hay guys. Fella was telling me about his soybeans yesterday. He is worried sick about them. I can't stand to watch the weather anymore. Went outside yesterday and the house had a healthy coating of box elder bugs. Must be three weeks early for those. Now I am worrying about what they know that I don't know!

We would have had hay down if that darn pice of junk John Deere 1219 would have not broke down again monday this is the third time this year that the slip clutch broke off the shaft , we will see if i am a better welder then the last two that have tryed . Got it all back together last evening and i am hear to tell ya that they are a real pain in the donky to work on . And yes if we get a good window we will lay down about 15-20 more acres weather we make round bales of some squares or just wrap it that is up to mother nature. As for us we are setting pretty good on hay for this year got both sides of the barn full and lots of round bales setting outside and a good number of silage bales wrapped.

I'm in South Central WI, and still plan on cutting some hay. May have to wait for a frost though to assist drying. "Freeze-dried" alfalfa tastes pretty good to the animals too!

Yeah...I here ya on the freeze dried part! I have four acres I'd like to get after again, but with the short days and colder weather, I have a feeling that may have to wait until spring.

Time to get the snowmobiles out!

I did get hay cut, dried and baled. I baled some wonderful hay on Sunday afternoon. That might be the last of it.

Making late season hay in Northern Ohio is not unheard of. I have done it several times myself (October/November). I too am hope'n for a winder to make some alfalfa. Think the grass is done for this season. Cut it late due to weather and not enough regrowth to justify the expense.

I was wanting to get 4th cutting alfalfa, and likewise too wet. This past weekend we had almost 2" of hail on the ground. Alfalfa is laying pretty flat now, I don't know if I'll try after freeze or not.
