disc mowers

Looking at getting a disc mower this winter. Mostly for road ditches. What should I be looking for?? Wear points, good brands, bad brands, etc. Thanks!

Stay away from ditches with disc mower!
Look for flail type mower, less parts to repair and requires less horsepower. There are offset or behind tractors type.

best thing NOT TO GET FOR ROAD DITCHES IS A DISC MOWER!!!! Ask your dealers and read a little, dont mow ditch banks with them.
My buddies dad learned the hard way, the disc mowere was hooked up to cut hay and his dad thought he would just go ahead and mow the ditches off while it was on. Next thing he knew the paramedics were getting him out of the tractor that was in about a 8-10 foot ditch.
The mowere threw a rock THROUGH the glass on the cab, knocked him out when it hit him in the head and the tractor went on its way in the ditch.
Tore lots of stuff up but luckily his pop was hurt real bad

I'm a Kuhn believer..... I've got a couple now with other paint, but still Kuhn bars. I've had PZ mowers too. Not doing that again.
The things I would look for in a Kuhn GMD disc mower are gearbox leaks, cutterbar leaks, and bad bearings. Take hold of each disc and check it for lateral movement in the bearings as well as excessive backlash in the gears. Above all else, make sure it has a good usable curtain covering the mower frame, or else have a clear plan of how you're going to make one, as a GMD 77HD curtain is over a grand to replace.
All else being equal, I would still be looking for cheap cheap in used disc mowers. There's still an element of surprise involved with them as they can blow up at any time.
Also keep in mind that an oil lubricated cutterbar like Kuhn's can not be operated continously at an angle greater than 10 degrees above or below horizontal. So, it may not be the best unit for mowing ditch banks.... depending on what angle you plan to operate at.
Hay DR may jump in here with a C&C solution for you that would operate at any angle.... Check the archives if he doesn't.

A used disc mower is usually no bargain. They lead a hard life and lots of expensive stuff in a cutter bar moving real fast.

I picked a used disc mower a while back, that was the worst I ever got burnt on used equipment. Just a warning.

You might be better off looking into a sickle mower that is belt driven, a disc mower is a pretty big investment to be running up and down ditches....

The county where I live uses a Kuhn disc mower to mow roadsides and ditches. I don't know what kind of a maintenance program they have as far as replacing knives and such but it does a very good job of cutting down anything anything in it's path, including small saplings and such.

Our county uses a Kuhn disc mower and love it. It has a break away hitch if they hit something.

I was burned on a used disc mower also. If you want a disc mower for road banks a cheaper brand new one is probably around 5k. I guess a bush hog doesn't fit your situation? Oh, I've been burned on used bush hogs also. Broke down and bought a new one.
