I recently purchased a 1219 haybine. Appearts to be in great shape, not bent up, etc. Everyone who owns one loves the way they run, ( I ran a 1209 a few times and it worked great). My problem is I can only run @ 3 MPH in orchard grass, or it will begin skipping & not cutting clean and the bats will start jumping pulling on the uncut crop. I have a new sickle bar in it, non-clog sections, platform is level. Any suggestions? Could it be that the wobble box is set up for 1000 RPM for some strange reason? I am running it @ 540. I am using a JD 2630 to mow with, very nimble! I appreciate any all help.

Bruce

First, thanks for the responses! Hold downs have more space than a folded dollar. The knife guards are non-clog, and I think this may be the problem! The standard guard uses the whole knife to cut VS the non-clog which may use @ 70% of the blade. I went over to help my neighbor mow last night, he has a 1209, running 5 MPH cut off clean, if I ran that fast, the grass was bent over and a ragged cut. I checked my skids, they are set low but not in the dirt. He is using the standard guards, this is the only difference. And yes my belt to the wobble box is tight, I am going to check strokes per minute a lunch time ( EST), and write back.

you gents are a great help.

Well first off ya have to have the knife hold downs set correctly and ya need the book for that as i can not remember off the top of my head . And one thing that i know for a fact is that they will not mow with a old 469 N H , ya just can not mow fast with them . As my buddy got one last year and you are lucky if ya can mow in 4th low on a 706 with the old 469 if ya could stay in the seat ya could run 2nd high . I just got home from working on it again for the third time this year it keeps breaking the slip clutch assambly off the input and John Deere is real proud of that shaft and hub they want just 476 bucks for a new shaft and hub . Now it has been welded as of today three times the first time was when i was away and my buddy had his brother weld it , that lasted twenty acres and it broke again so i got the pleasure for taking apart the whole gear box to get the shaft out this time my buddy took it to a local weld shop and they welded it that time it lasted 15 acres and broke THRU the weld ( that is the fault of the welder ) this time i welded it the correct way and if anything breaks this next time it will have to twist the shaft off . Do i like this Haybine NO give me a New Holland anyday.

Your going to have to define cutting conditions a little better. My 1209 with new sections and Guards won't do 3mph in laid over, half dead, grown over, hasn't been mowed in a year grass period. I went to a maintained, rutinely cut stand and could go as fast as I could stay in the seat.

No the woble box wouldn't be set up for 1000 pto. The main gear box up top could be. If your not sure drop a note and I'll check mine and see what one turn of the PTO get ya on the knife drive.

Beyond what has been mention I would also check the timing (point of knife should travel from under one guard to under the next. And the shoes under the mower to see that you are not running the kinfe in the ground.

Use a folded dollar bill to adjust the holddowns. Clearance can be above or below secion. If you don't, it is like a pair of scissors with a loose bolt.

What sections are you using? If really fine grass you may have to use smooth and sharpen daily. (a pain but works)

If you have a tach, check the speed of the driven sheave. OM may list strokes per minute. One revolution of sheave is two strokes.

Is belt that drives wobble box tight and in good shape? Maybe you need to adjust reel cam so teeth angle is different. That's my guess as no Orchardgrass down here in Tx. Tx Jim
