AC rotary cutter troubles

I need some help with a rotary cutter gearbox. The cutter is a 5' Allis Chalmers pull type, dating from the early '50's. The gearbox splits at the output gear, with the input shaft staying with the top half of the box. The box is shimmed with gaskets at this joint and at the front cover plate. We took the box apart to replace the seals, and, well, lost our gasket (shim) stack heights in the process. Any info on setting up this gearbox would be appreciated. The box is howling pretty bad now. It wasn't before we started. Thanks,
John

I think you need some "lash / play" as you would in a car rear end not too much, maby about
.008 or so enough so you don't put gears in bind, just dont make too sloppy. good luck .

Baring anyone with specific advice on that box to the contrary, i have to agree with the cowman.

No endplay, and minimal to -0- preload.

Well, you either got it too loose or too tight. You should be able to figure that one out. I don't think you want any noticable freeplay. But it don't want to be in a bind neither.
