I need a good plow share for a 12" little genius # 8 plow. It has the one piece moldboard and share. Any help will be appreciated.

I have a Little genius plow and need some help.

On the bottom of the plow shares (may not be the correct terminology, there is a slip cover of steeel.

It slips over the bottom of the share and makes contact w/the ground when plowing. Unfortunately, one is broke. Does anyone know where or if I can buy these.

Don't want to make the plow into a lawn ornament, really want to use it as my older brother gave it to me.

Scott: you'll have to go right to part numbers of the frog and the old plow share. Little Genius plows could be equiped with any one of 8-10 different plow bottoms.

You might be pleasantly surprised if you go into CaseIH with those part numbers. I'm hearing that some dealers in the US, can actually get these. Here in Canada, CaseIH tells us pre 1960 plow wear parts are no longer available.

There are stores you can go to that can match up old plow wear parts by measuring your old part, hole size and distance from one to another, and applying that to a diagram they have. Problem with that is try and find a store employee that knows how to do it right.

If you know anyone in your area into competition plowing, plow days, plowing clubs, etc., these guys will have a supplier that is knowledgeable, conscientious, etc. Usually it takes a store employee, into or least interested in plowing with old plows. A lot of stores have the resources to order old plow parts, but I find it just takes that one employee who is interested.

Another problem is these guys who know are retiring, yes many of them are deceased. Years ago I dealt with an IH parts man that knew without looking at the book, the specs of every plow, that all his customers owned and had been bought new at that dealership. I remember I tricked him up once, I bought a plow 200 miles away. It was equiped with different bottoms, that particular dealership never sold new. We had quite a heated discussion as he tried to tell me there were no plows in the area, so equiped. Oh, if we could just dig some of those old guys up and have them tell us what they know.

Hugh, where are you in Canada? I'm in central Ontario and Little Genius plows with "Ace bottoms" were very popular here. My uncle had a two furrow Little Genius with "Rex bottoms", the only one I've seen. BTW, these were #8C plows, some folks say the "C" was for Canadian plows built at IH in Hamilton.
cheers,

Jim: I'm at Strathroy, came here 5 years ago from Nova Scotia. You say Central Ontario, with the physical shape of the province, I have some difficulty deciding where the center is. I'm certain of one thing, the center of the land mass is quite different from the population center, but then the center of agriculture may be different again.

The plows built at Hamilton were never called Little Genius No.8, but rather only No.8 Tractor Plow. While the two plows are quite similar, most part numbers are different. The ACE bottoms were forged at Hamilton and only used on Hamilton built plows. Several versions of the GP bottom were forged in the US and those bottoms would fit a Hamilton pplow. Any literature published on Hamilton built plows make no reference to Little Genius, only No.8 Tractor Plow. The literature on No.8 plows built at Canton Il call them Little Genius.

There are very visable differences in the two plows. Hamilton plow has an adjustable frame for width of cut, Little Genius does not. The depth and levelling levers are quite different. While the plow beams look similar they have different part numbers. I have not checked out part numbers on wheels, axles and hitch.

Hugh, thanks for the clarification. I have several unrestored #8 plows including a 4 furrow on rubber. Can you confirm if Hamilton built a 4 furrow #8?
I'm near Peterborough.

Jim: One thing I forgot, if an implement had C in model number usually at the start as in C-28 mower or C-36 plow, that indicated they were built in Canada, and of course that meant Hamilton. Not all implements built at Hamilton had this, not exactly sure why.

I expect Hamilton did build a 4 bottom No. 8 tractor plow, however I've never seen one. Does your 4 bottom plow have ACE bottoms. If so that would clinch it as ACE bottoms were never installed on US built plows when new. I maybe spoke too quickly on that, ACE bottoms will bolt up to both Little Genius and Little Wonder plows, thus someone could have changed a US built plow to ACE bottoms.

Your 4 bottom plow should have a diagonal main beam, going across top of plow beams. If that is solid square stock steel, the plow will be No. 8 Hamilton, or Little Genius, or Numbers 14, 15 or 16. I believe the 14 and 15 were also called Little Genius (US built), while the 16 was just model No. 16. Not sure where the 16 was built. Since IH didn't label it Little Genius it may have been built in Hamilton. These were all pre 1962 plows, after that no more Little genius and model numbers were all above 20.

If the diagonal is box beam it will be number 60 or 70 and in that case will have plow chief or super chief bottoms.

Hugh, I looked at my 4 furrow today. It has adjustable beams set all the way out at 12". It also has the diagonal brace but not square stock as on my 3 furrow. The brace is solid (not box beam) but 'stepped' on the sides. Certainly looks like it left the factory this way. Moldboards are thin, number on them looks like SA6104A.

Farmallman, I thought new moldboards for ACE bottoms were no longer available. Do you have a source?

Farmallman, I'm near Peterborough, Ontario. A couple of years ago I asked a local Case IH dealer about ACE moldboards...I think he is still laughing.
