brush hog cutter drops out.

i rented a jd tractor with 5' brush hog to clear brush and small trees at a scout camp, while working the cutter drop out of the hog, the rental co. whats $550.00 for repairs, bevel gear, caps, shim and seals.
there are no rocks in the area. i did run over stumps that where decaying, i would think a hog could handle that, and trees were 3"dia. or less.
question is operator fault or poor maintenance.

That is ridiculous. You did not damage that rental brush hog by using it to clear a few saplings in a deer camp. The rental company has to totally eat that bill. I have a jd brush hog that probably has at least 2000 hours of use on it. Every time I use it the bevel gear could fall out of it and I know that. That rental company has probably rented that thing out 100 times at $75 bucks a crack, or about $7500 dollars out of their $900 dollar brush hog. They can fix it. The people before you might have been using it to brush hog cinder blocks for all they know. You weren't "abusing" their brush hog. Like having a jack hammer break while busting up concrete because it had a rock in it. Just return it, smile, say thanks and leave.

I have no idea what the mechanism is like on the brush hog that you rented. I have an old "Big Bee" brand brush hog. The "cutter" is called a stump-jumper. The stump-jumper holds the two blades and attaches to the splined shaft that comes out of the bottom of the gear box. The stump-jumper is held onto the splined shaft with a castlated nut and a cotter pin.

If the cotter pin broke and the castle nut backed off, the cutter would fall out from under the brush hog. After raising the brush hog high enough to crawl under it, and setting it on solid, sturdy blocks, it would take about five minutes to raise the stump-jumper back up onto the splined shaft and put the nut back on.

I guess maybe the problem on your brush hog is different from what I just described.

It is my opinion that it is probably a combination of both. It being a rental I would guess that you aren't the first to use it like that. I am also pretty sure that it has been used a lot harder than you used it. I agree that if I rent something and use it in a negligant way that I should be responsible for repairs. The problem is I don't always consider negligent what they consider negligent. That is why I pay the damage waiver when I rent a machine.

That sounds high to me..... as I can buy a light duty bushhog for about the same money.

That said, that's the reason I won't bushhog for anyone but myself. It's way to easy to tear something up when bushhogging unknown territory.

After it's grown for awhile a dozer might be a better alternative.

I think I'd try to negotiate a better price.
